Qualitative vs. Quantitative Research Guide

The document discusses qualitative and quantitative research. It provides 3 key differences between the two types: 1. Qualitative research aims to understand underlying reasons through interpretation while quantitative research expresses data numerically. 2. Qualitative research uses small sample sizes and minimal statistics while quantitative research uses large samples and statistical analysis. 3. Qualitative findings are particular to a phenomenon while quantitative findings can be generalized to all situations.

INFORMATION SHEET 3Q.2.1.1

“Types of Research”

1. Basics or Pure Research

Basic or pure research aims to come up with a new knowledge or contribute to the
existing body of knowledge.

2. Applied Research

Applied research amiss to find applications for the theories or create a product
employing the existing ideas or theory.

3. Qualitative Research

Qualitative research deals with the characteristics observed from the respondents
with minimal t no use of statistical analysis.

4. Quantitative Research

Quantitative research uses quantitative procedures where the respondents’ traits

are translated numerically. It focusses on the analysis and interpretation of the raw
numeric data gathered based on statistic outcomes.

Since research is viewed as a systematic and scientific investigation, it is also follows the
step similar to the scientific method. Whether the research is qualitative or quantitative, the
same procedres are employed.

Steps in Research Process

1. Identifying the Research Problem

This initial step in the research process is the recognition of a research problem.
Research Problem are those that cause unfavorable circumstances in a community or
an organization.

2. Formulating Hypotheses and Designing the Study

Reviewing the literature can also help in formulating research hypotheses. A

research hypothesis is an intellectual guess or tentative answer to the research
questions. Hypotheses serves as guide toward designing the research designing the
research methodology.

3. Collecting and Organizing Data

After designing and c planning the methods to be done, data collection can
commence. Data collection is the process of gathering information by means of a
defined method in order to support the hypothesis. Data could be anything that is
used to represent facts and values or anything that may represent a characteristic of
something that is being measured.

4. Analyzing Data and Testing Hypotheses

Data gathered should be organized to facilitate data analysis. Data analysis is the
process of examining data agains the preconceived hypotheses, then the hypotheses
cannot be rejected, suggesting that the present research results conform to the
literature. Rejection of hypotheses implies that the results deviate from the existing
literature, which may be caused by cultural differences or uncontrolled extraneous
variables.

5. Interpreting Data

Presenting data in a manner understandable to readers is not enough for a scientific

investigation. Gathered data must be interpreted correctly the way for drawing out
meaningful implications and in making the research relevant. Interpretation of data
against an established theory may be desirable. In the same manner, painting a true
of the data against an established formulated hypothesis may generate meaningful
findings. Furthermore, qualitative research, the o return to research subjects for
validation purposes is deemed necessary. This process is termed as member-
checking.

6. Reporting Results

Reporting or communicating research results for public information is essential.

With this may be used by stakeholders for their own benefit, a responsibility needed
to be internalized by researcher. Similarly, public dissemination of research results
may give rise to further questions or research problems to be undertaken by
interested parties.

Guidelines in Constructing an Appropriate Study Design

1. From whom will your data come?

2. Where are you going to collect your data?

3. When and until when do you plan to gather your data?

4. How are you going to facilitate the whole research activity?

Characteristics of a Successful Researcher (PE2AC2HIL)

1. Practical

Another good quality that a researcher must emulate is practicality. In the vent
where resources are limited, researchers must be able to find ways to make use of
the given resources and locally available materials to compensate for the things
needed without compromising the quality of the research output. They must also
aware of the sources of opportunities to deliver what are expected from their
research studies.

2. Efficient

Efficiency is manifested in the proper use of time, effort, and resources for an
intended purpose. In other words, efficiency is doing the right thing.

3. Effective

Being effective means doing the right thing. Researchers must know how to foresee
errors, so that they can be addressed immediately, if not totally avoided. Proper
procedure should be developed to minimize the effects of errors.

4. Active

Researchers always respond to the challenges of the modern world. They get
involved in all research opportunities available for them, and collaborate with others
in research activities relevant to their expertise. They must also be active in sharing
information and helping other researcher to further and advocate their research
areas.

5. Curious

A successful researcher is curious and determined to investigate the intricacy of

things. Taking pleasure in reading research journals, in finding out different trends in
research, and in discovering and learning new things is also a trait of curios
individual.

6. Cost-Effective

Because of the limit resources, successful researcher makes it a point that these
resources will not be wasted. To them, every single peso is important and must be
utilized properly.

7. Honest

Researchers display a high level of intellectual honesty. They are not swayed to
what is expected, but rather to what is true. Regardless of the results of their
investigations, good researchers report accurately their findings in their reports. In
the event of contrasting results, they find reasons for the cause of conflict.

8. Inventive

Researchers always have novel ideas. If a method is not feasible, they have
alternative procedures to attain the objectives of the research. They always try to
find unique or new ways to handle difficulties in solving a problem.

9. Logical

Researchers do not venture on any method to attain their goals. They usually follow
procedures identified to the scientific method in finding out answers to their queries.
Because of this use of the scientific method, researchers are described to be logical.
