CHARACTERISTICS
SERVICE
1 - Service
Characteristics
The aim of this introductory chapter is to illustrate some of the characteristics of
the system of fundamental importance to the technical staff, in particular, where to
find the equipment status and how to keep it up to date.

Identifying the Boards

Most boards of the system are identified:

 by its Reference (950... or 259...), which is always indicated on

the label stuck on the board.

 by the Serial Number (SN), indicated on the label stuck on

the board.

 by the Configuration Index (CI), indicated by two decimal

figures. The Configuration Index represents the HW level of
the board. The Configuration Index is loaded in specific
components mounted on each board.

Refer to the next section for information on how to disassembly the unit and
which board can be removed.

System Information
Press the MENU key and select “SYSTEM INFO” option. The unit will show:

 the model name and serial number,

 the installed release,

 the hardware ID number,

SERVICE MANUAL

Service Key
As of software version 5.5x Esaote has introduced a USB Service Key with
time limit function. The key is personal, and is associated to its owner. The
key has to be renewed yearly, by a dedicated web application described
below, otherwise it will not be possibleto access to the protected service
features.

The new USB service key has PN 140009500.

The old service key PN 8610264000 will be necessary to start an installation

or upgrade from a software version lower than 5.5x to 5.5x or higher. After
the update the old service key will become inactive for the updated system.
During the software installation/upgrade procedure the new service key will
be required to proceed with the update.

For software version lower than 5.5x, the old service key has to be used.

Note
For software version lower than 5.5x, the old service key has to be
used.

Service key Activation and renewal procedure

Without an activated and valid new service key the software upgrade will not
be possible. Additional procedural details will be described in the technical
notes dedicated to these software releases.

Note
Remember to order the new service key and activate it before the
installation of the mentioned software release.

Verify in advance that all the authorized service engineers have a

valid [Link] account. If not, insert a WebHelpDesk re-
quest, requesting for an account

Precautions

SERVICE
WARNINGS
It is forbidden to edit or delete files that belong to the software package. Doing so
may compromise the system safety.

PRECAUTIONS

A series of precautions that must be observed each time you perform an operation
on the system are emphasized below:

 the equipment must always be switched off before carrying

out any service operation. In the same way, all the probes and
peripherals (for example external monitor, printer, video-
recorder) must also be disconnected.

 the boards must be removed when the equipment is powered

off.

 an electrostatic discharge occurring through the contact with

the operator, can irreparably damage the electronic
components on system boards, that are sensitive to electro-
static discharges: it is therefore recommended that
precautions to prevent these discharges are taken each time a
board has to be removed/installed. In operational terms, this
means:

 the machine must rest on an electro-static mat connected to

earth.

 the service technician must also be connected to the same

earth each time he removes or installs the boards.

 the boards and components must always be moved in their

special electro-static containers.

11

Probe Adapter (PB) Board (B1)

The Probe Adapter is the board for the connection of the echo probes: the probes
are physically connected to this board.

The board mounts n.3 (three) small connectors and n.1 (one) large connector
together with the switching logic to enable the active connector.

The main function of the board is to switch among the four probe connectors
selecting the active one for the acquisition.

FE-PB Adapter Link Board (B2)

The FE-PB Adapt Link Board is a flexible circuit that links the Probe Adapter
Board with the Front End Board.

Front End (FE) Board (B3)

The Front End Board carries out some fundamental functions regarding probe
managing and power supplying.

Probe Transmission Section

The board manages the transmission to the probe controlling the pulses to be
transmitted to the elements. The transmitters are individually controlled in term of
enabling, delaying and pulse shape by a dedicated FPGA.

Probe Reception Section

The board manages also the reception of the signals implementing the receiving
beam former.

The received signals are summed together, amplified, digitally converted and then
sent to dedicated RX FPGAs that implement the digital focalization.

CW Acquisition Section

This dedicated section manages the acquisition of the CW signals from their
analogic delay to their A/D conversion.

86
SERVICE MANUAL

Power Supply Section

The FE implements the power supply function distributing the supply voltage
within both FE and BE boards so that all the other needed supply voltages can be
generated. It supplies also the AT voltages for probe transmission and the standby

BLOCK DIAGRAM
voltages for PC module.

In this section a dedicated microcontroller manages the system start-up,

suspension and shutdown, the batteries and their chargers. The microcontroller
also monitors the internal temperature and controls the fans speed.

Battery Bridge Board (B4)

The Battery Bridge board connects the two optional batteries to the Front End.

The bridge includes the power voltages, the SMB logic connections and the
monitoring thermal signals.

Back End (BE) Board (B5)

The board implements several functions.

The BE board processes the RF signal through n.2 (two) FPGAs and n.2 (two)
DSPs. The first FPGA processes the RF signal and the Doppler data, the second
processes the CFM data.

The first DSP controls the processes on the two FPGAs, the acquisition sequences
and processes both Doppler data and Physio signal. The second filters and mixes
the image data.

The PC module is mounted on the BE board. The PC main functions are:

 Managing of the cine memory,

 Managing of the scan converter,

 Generation of signals for the two LCD displays (main display

and touchscreen display),

 Managing of the user interface in term of input from the

keyboard and output to the displays.,

 Managing of the digital peripheral on the USB,

87
SERVICE MANUAL

 Managing of the LAN connection,

 Managing of the audio signal for the speakers,

 Control of the Hard disk mounted on this board,

 Control of the DVD burner.

A dedicated Wi-Fi module is accommodated on the board. This module is

connected to the PC Module and to the Wi-Fi antennas.

The BE Board also processes the ECG PHISYIO analogic signal up to its AD
conversion.

Connection Bridge Board (B6)

The board makes available on dedicated connectors the signals to be distributed to
the keyboard, to the monitor, to the Wi-Fi antennas and to the DVD recorder.

Mains Power Group (B7)

The group manages the connection to the mains power line. It sends and receives
power to/from the insulating transformer. It mounts the power sockets for the
peripheral devices and the switch to enable or disable their power supplying.

The AC/DC module converts the mains voltage to 19V. This voltage powers the
electronic and it is sent to the Front End. This group also generates the 12V for the
main monitor.

Keyboard Group (B8-B12)

The Keyboard Group is composed of n.5 (five) boards.

The Keyboard Main board (B8) implements:

 the connection towards the main group of electronic boards,

 USB Hub for the USB connections,

 N.2 (two) external accessible USB connectors,

 the loudspeakers connection,

88
SERVICE MANUAL

 N.1 (one) microcontroller for managing the control panel

keys, the encoders, the TGC potentiometers, the touchscreen
and the leds of the board keys,

 N.1 (one) microcontroller for managing the qwerty

keyboard.

BLOCK DIAGRAM
The Keyboard Extension board (B9) manages:

 the control panel keys,

 the gain encoders,

 the leds of the control panel keys,

 the leds to light the qwerty keyboard.

The Trackball Switched board (B10) manages:

 the trackball keys,

 the trackball keys leds,

The Alpha Keyboard board (B11) manages:

 the connection to the qwerty keyboard,

 the leds for scroll, number and caps lock functions of the
qwerty keyboard.

The Keyboard Encoder Panel board (B12) manages the six toggle encoders.

TROUBLE SHOOTING
23 -General Rules for
Exchanging Information
Whenever the field service engineer requires support to the central service to such
a problem in the field, there is a minimum amount of information that must be
provided both to correctly identify the problem and to speed up its solution that is:

 System information,

 Log files,

 Fault description,

 If necessary, copy of the archive,

 If necessary, copy of both clinical and system settings.

System Information
The first thing to be done is to identify the unit, this means to know the unit serial
number, the model and the installed software release: this information is listed in
the “SYSTEM INFO” option of the MENU key.

Log Files
From the user interface If the system allows the user to access to the system menu, the same option allows
the user to export the log files on an USB medium.

How to export log  Switch the unit on.

files
 Press the MENU key and select the “SYSTEM INFO” option.

 Insert an USB pen drive.

 Press EXPORT LOG FILE TO USB.

149
SERVICE MANUAL

 Wait for the cooperation execution.

 Press OK to finish.

Note
The log files are saved already zipped.

From the operative system If the system is not working and it is not possible to access to the system menu,
follow the procedure below to save the log files:

Procedure  Switch the unit on with the service key inserted.

 Place the cursor on the “Start” option of the Tool bar and
press ENTER.

Service key is required.  Select the “Control Panel” option.

 Using the trackball select the DATA(E:) disk in the

“Address” field and press ENTER.

 Using the trackball select the “work” folder and press ENTER.

 Using the trackball select the “Logs” folder.

 Copy the folder in an external medium.

Fault Description
The description of the fault has to be the more detailed as possible, since this
simplifies the problem identification and solution. The following information
should always be reported:

 When applicable, the active probe.

 If the problem affects the real time functioning, the active

application and modality (for instance, in cardiac application
with Doppler PW).

 If the problem affects the not-scanning operations, the

involved function (for example measurements, annotations,
report).

 If the problem is related to data archiving, the used support

(for example internal Data Base, DICOM server) and the

150
SERVICE MANUAL

kind of failure (for example data not transferred, missing

data).

 If any background operation was running when the problem

occurred.

TROUBLE SHOOTING
 If the problem is related to the peripherals, the kind of
peripheral and its failure.

 If the problem is during the upgrading procedure, the used

procedure and the step.

 If the problem is intermittent and reproducible: whenever it

is possible, it is extremely useful for the fault identification to
have a known operations sequence that always reproduces
the problem.

Together with this information, the description should state all the steps that cause
the problem (for instance during 2D-CFM scanning with SP2430 probe in
Cardiac, the 2D sector was reduced to 45°, the CFM sector was set to concurrent.
After having saved a clip the scanning sector doesn’t follow the movements of the
trackball). Images and/or Clips showing the problems are of course other useful
items.

Copy of the Archive

From the user interface If the system allows the user to do archiving operations, follow the procedure
below to copy the archive:

Procedure  Switch the unit on.

24 - Log Files

TROUBLE SHOOTING
The log file has to be saved soon after the problem occurs or, at the latest, at the
next start up. The file has a FIFO structure with a limited memory availability:
When the log file memory is full, the oldest events registered in the file are
eliminated to free space for the recent ones.

For this reason the log file has to be saved as soon as possible.

Log Files Organization

The zip of log files (and the “Logs” folder) contains the following file and folders:

 LogParser executable file that allows to analize the log

contents.

 TextLog folder that contains the list of the entries done on

the system.

 LogInstallMS folder that traces the updates done on the

system.

 Dump folder that traces Operating System errors. Normally,

it’s empty.

 Evt folder that contains the Windows event register in an

easy-to read file .

LogParser Executable

This file allows the technician to look at the log files for a first error analysis. To
launch the executable, place the cursor on it and press the ENTER key twice. This
utility can be run both directly in the system or in any PC having the following
operating systems:

 Windows XP Home,

 Windows XP Professional,

153
SERVICE MANUAL

 Windows Vista,

 Windows 7 32 and 64 bit

 Windows 8.1

Fig 63: LogParser

The utility is organized in four main areas.

The TextLog folder, containing the log files, is displayed in the upper left area
(indicated by the number “1” in the above figure). Place the cursor on the “+”
symbol displayed beside the name and press ENTER to display its contents.

TextLog Folder This folder contains the list of all entries done on the system, that is the list of all
times the unit has been switched on. Each entry is so listed:

date[yyyy-mm-dd] time [hh:mm:ss] - date[yyyy-mm-dd] time [hh:mm:ss]

The first date and time indicate when the unit has been turned on; the second date
and time when the unit has been turned off.

When an entry is selected, the areas “2” and “3” show the logged information
related to this entry.

154
SERVICE MANUAL

In the left bottom area (“2”) the following system information is listed:

 model name,

 installed licences and the corresponding licence numbers,

TROUBLE SHOOTING
 installed build,

 the ID button number,

 hardware characteristics.

In the main area (“3”) the list of the operations logged for the selected entry is
displayed.

The three buttons displayed at the bottom of the area “3” allow to change the
zoom factor (buttons “-” and “+”) and to refresh the log of the operations.

Each logged operation is so listed:

date time [Software component][log group] logged operation

Criteria for displaying the Displaying criteria can be selected from the upper left and right lists. The upper left
logs list contains all the system software components; the upper right list contains logic
log groups with which the list of logged operations can be organized for an easiest
analysis.

Place the cursor on the desired element of one of the lists to display the related logs.

It is possible to do a double selection, that is selecting both the software

component and the logic log group. In this case the system displays all logged
operations satisfying both criteria.

Evt Folder In the Evt Folder a file containing the transposition of the Windows Event
Register is reported. This could be useful to improve the understanding of several
problems related to the Operating System.

Information is inserted in the file according to the following format:

date[yyyy-mm-dd] time [hh:mm:ss] /type/subtype/ID/Name/Description

Type 1 informs about Errors, Type 2 informs about Warnings

155

User Session
Whenever the log has to be analysed, the simplest way is to follow the procedure
below:

Procedure  Expand the TextLog folder.

 Select the entry to be analised.

 Select in the right combo box the UserSession option.

The logged operations are displayed in chronological order, showing the

operations done by the user.

25 - Format Disk
This chapter gives the indications on how to use the format disk.

TROUBLE SHOOTING
When Using the Format Disk
A dedicated format disk (code 301001200) has been introduced with the purpose
of restoring the original conditions in the MyLab, after a defect in the HDD, or the
replacement of this part.

As the disk name suggests, all data saved in the internal data base are erased when
the format disk is run. For this reason the format disk has to be used as the
very last action whenever the system software is locked and there is no way
to re-start correctly the system.

The internal archive MUST be copied whenever it is possible; it is also

suggested to copy the clinical and system configuration to re-configure the system
as it is, once the format procedure has been completed (refer to Section 3, Chapter
12).

WARNING The format disk will erase all patient data saved in the internal data base:
before running the format procedure, if possible, save the archive folder.

Note
The field service technician must inform the system owner that the
format procedure erases all patient data saved in the internal
database. If no archive back up is available and if the internal
Archive folder cannot be copied, the patient data will be definitively
lost after the format procedure.
If the system owner does not accept to lose data, please contact the
Central Service.

Before executing the format procedure, run first the upgrading procedure,
described in this manual (refer to Section 5 for further details) to try to unlock the
system.

WARNING If the equipment is equipped with the batteries, be sure that the system is
connected to the mains before starting the format procedure. The system
must remain connected to the mains during the format and during all the
next steps, including the first reboot to complete the firmware upgrade.

159
SERVICE MANUAL

Format Procedure
The format procedure has seven (7) main steps to be done in this order:

1. Boot Configuration,
