(Reflection Paper on the Sunday Gospels directed to the Pharisees)

The parables located in Luke 15:1-32, 16:1-5, and 19-31, are those that have a common
ground in which it serves as a connection between each other’s story. This connection begins in
Lk 15:1-32, in which it talks about how we received God’s mercy through forgiveness and
understanding of one another. In three different scenarios, they showed a common theme in
rejoicing a sinner’s repentance, not because he is sorry, but because he wants to give back to God
the mercy he has given to us through his love, because when we are grateful for the mercy we
have received in our lives, then it will be easier for us to rejoice for mercy that is shown to
others. The second part of this connection is seen in Lk 16:1-5, which is opening our eyes to
what is around us, and have a much greater sensitivity to those who live with nothing and show
them compassion, so that we can somehow improve their lives in our own special way. Lastly in
Lk 16:19-31, we start to have a much deeper understanding on why these gospels are
interconnected with one another. The principle of this story is that we should not transform a bad
situation into something that we can only benefit. We must use that as an opportunity to be
responsible enough to become an example for others to follow. This is the very reason why this
is directed to the Pharisees, because they literally mean the “separated one” thus we must have a
much deeper consideration for them, since they are the ones who are mostly in need of our
understanding, and accept them, for they are the ones who are poor at heart, so that we can make
something good out of a bad situation, and show them light in a world full of darkness.

At the end of the day, we must inculcate what we have learned from the parables
abovementioned by having three considerations and applying it on our day-to-day lives. First
consideration is to be aware that God created us for a purpose, and designed us to fulfill that
purpose. Thus, we must evaluate the choice if it will and hinder us from achieving the purpose he
has given to us. The second consideration is to ask ourselves if we have total peace from God if
we choose to do that action, because sometimes we tend to overlook a decision and not fully
understand the risks that we are taking, creating an angst with ourselves. Lastly, we must
consider if it is the most perfect time to do this decision and if we are willing to let God close
this door. Rushing a decision does not always equate with the best decisions. This is not always
easy because we live in a fast paced world where everyone is pushing you to move and thing
quickly, just because we let it get into our heads and later on struggle immensely when we begin
to realize that God may not want us to move forward with this choice. Sometimes it is just wiser
to slow down, plan, and wait just a little bit more time to develop, because God’s plan is always
better than ours.

We must always learn to trust God if he asks us to stop or move forward, because he will
always guides us to make the right decision, so that we will not regret what we have done in the
past, just because we hastily decided not to forgive someone because we just based our
conclusion in their past, their appearance, and the things they did to make the situation favorable
to him. Loving our neighbor was never easy, but it is never too late to appreciate others’ small
efforts to become a better person for the greater glory of God.
