1. What is literacy?
Literacy is the ability to read and write.
2. What are early literacy skills?
Skills that begin to develop in the preschool years, such as alphabet knowledge, phonological
awareness, letter writing, print knowledge, and oral language are early literary skills.
3. What is alphabet knowledge?
Alphabet knowledge is the knowledge of individual letter names, sounds, and shapes. The
alphabetic principle is the idea that letters and groups of letters represent the sounds of
spoken language.
4. What are concepts (conventions) about print?
Concepts of Print refers to the awareness of 'how print works'. This includes the knowledge of
the concept of what books, print, and written language are, and how they function. It
encompasses a number of understandings that allow the reading process to take place
including: understanding that print conveys a message.
5. What are conventional literacy skills?
Conventional literacy skills refers to such skills as decoding, oral reading fluency, reading
comprehension, writing, and spelling. The use of these skills is evident within all literacy
practices, and they are readily recognizable as being necessary or useful components of
literacy.
6. What is decoding?
Decoding happens when kids use their knowledge of letter-sound relationships to correctly
pronounce written words. That includes more than just knowing the sounds individual letters
make. Kids need to know concepts like letter patterns, too.
7. What is environmental print?
Environmental print is the print of everyday life. It's the name given to the print that appears
in signs, labels, and logos. Street signs, candy wrappers, labels on peanut butter and the K in
Kmart are other examples of environmental print.
8. What is onset-rime?
The "onset" is the initial phonological unit of any word (e.g. c in cat) and the term "rime" refers
to the string of letters that follow, usually a vowel and final consonants (e.g. at in cat). Not all
words have onsets. ... This can help students decode new words when reading and spell
words when writing.
