Goals 1. In spite of challenges, youth think about how to reach their potential by seeking opportunities and
ways to get involved in their school/community.
2. Youth understand where to go for advice/help/counseling—including nonprofit services and how to
access them.
3. Youth hear from older high school students in Q&A (What to expect, their advice; what you wish you
had known when you first started; what was surprising/difficult/easy; what you worried about too much,
etc.)
4. Students journal intentions to try one or more options and share-out to grow champions for each
other.
Overview
Students watch a clip of another student, Tiffara, who has beat all odds. Tiffara took advantage of opportunities in her life and
persisted in her efforts. This lesson triggers excitement about opportunities in school and the community. It sparks students to seek
resources and opportunities to develop and nurture their sparks, leadership skills and drive to contribute. In the flood of new
information and experiences in the fall, students are more likely to pursue opportunities and resources outside the classroom if they
have developed an intention to do so. The lesson closes with students developing a plan for engagement and a fun share-out activity.

Lesson Objectives for Teachers & Students
By participating in this lesson, young people will be able to:
Visualize a place for themselves in the high school community.
Self-reflect on how opportunities can support their aspirations and develop their plan to engage.
By participating in this lesson, teachers will see student interests and be able to help youth overcome obstacles to engagement.
Materials
CNN Hero Clip: Tiffara Steward
Site Coordinator shares the resources using visuals (a power point or short video clips that highlight opportunities at the high
school and student involvement). List of opportunities, fliers, club schedules, contact information for on campus and off-
campus support.
Bingo Cards. (Note: You can tailor the cards to fit the profiles of the students by class.)
