Slide 3 Review of Literature and Studies
This part presents the literature reviewed from the different sources with respect to
the topic studied. The literature review provides an overview of the teaching of MAPEH
education and online instructional strategies. This is research-based process since it
reviews the sources gathered and that the review is presented into sub-sections.
Teaching MAPEH Education. According to the National Association of Sport and
Physical Education 2015, MAPEH is defined as “a planned sequential K-12 standards-
based program of curricula and instruction designed to develop motor skills, knowledge,
and behaviors of healthy active living, physical fitness, sportsmanship, self-efficacy, and
emotional intelligence.”
With the approval also of the Schools Physical Education and Sports Development
Act of 1969, it was stressed aside from arts and health that physical education and
sports development program be integrated in all schools in the Philippines which shall
be undertaken by the DepEd in accordance to the guiding principle.
The National Center for Education Statistics (2016) stressed that the teaching of
MAPEH is an integral part of the total education of every child in Kindergarten through
Grade 12 since it is an essential subject on artistic enhancement.
(Castelli, [Link], 2015) emphazised that the subject is essential to the development
skills in different areas. It teaches students the importance of artistry and confidence.
Strategies in Teaching MAPEH Online. teaching should be diverse and different
since students differ in terms of their intelligence. As an effective teaching, strategies
should be used to effectively enhance learners’ knowledge, skills, and attitude. Well-
trained teachers using online should be considered, however, a number of teachers are
illiterate in terms of using ICT platforms. This is partly because many teachers regard
technology as a threat to their authority as the main source of knowledge.
Yang (2017) emphasized that certain strategies are frequently adopted in online
courses which include (1) promoting interactivity through asynchronous and
synchronous communication or delivery; (2) facilitating the application of concepts (3)
using video demonstrations, such as screencasts for demonstrating tools and programs;
and (4) conveying a strong social presence or a sense of belonging to a learning
community
As emphasized by Cook, [Link]. (2014) in their study on Technology and Online
Education: Models for Change, technology changes from 2010 to the present and that it
uses products and methods created from past technological ideas and leading to
disruptive technology in a three step process: incremental innovative technology, semi-
radical, and innovative disruptive technological.
Internet Communication Tools. It was stressed by Razik, [Link]. (2013), communication
has moved from printing, radio, telephone, cell phone to the Internet and digital
technologies, videoconferencing, and Skype peer-to-peer Internet telephony protocols.
The proliferation of technology in schools changes in the late 20th century and early
21st century has made communication personal and powerful and has greatly impacted
our culture and commerce. The eight Internet communications tools from technological
developments and prominently adapted for business, training, and online learning from
1990 up to present include the World Wide Web, Electronic Mail, Instant Messaging,
Voice Over Internet Protocol, Interactive Video Conferencing, Skype, Mobile Phones,
and Social Network
Augmented Reality. Another Online Teaching Strategy is known as augmented reality,
according to Cheng & Tsai, 2013, it is the further realization of integration between
human and machine, providing a seamless access to information without requiring a
user’s active input. Perhaps the most well-known example of this technology is Google
Glass. A head-mounted display, Glass is a thin physical visor that resembles
eyeglasses in form factor. The power of Glass comes in the augmented reality
functionality, processing the immediate environment and responding with additional
feedback (IEEE Spectrum, 2009). Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
E-Readers. Another online strategy being used is the E-Readers also called an e-book
reader or e-book device, is a mobile electronic device that is designed primarily for the
purpose of reading digital e-books and periodicals.
The benefits of e-readers are clear; they save students money on purchasing books and
they eliminate the need for costly updates and editions. With each eBook, a student
may have access to countless updates over the course of their education.
New devices, like the NoteSlate, allow students to hand-draw notes directly into
text, make annotations, and physically interact with learning materials in much the same
way they traditionally have done with paper-based materials (Noteslate, 2013).
Theoretical Framework of the Study .This study is anchored basically from
Experiential Learning Theory of David Kolb (1984) which shows how learners acquire
knowledge in different way. Learning experiences can be classified in terms of the
amount of control that the student has over the content and nature of the learning
activity, and there are three types learning categories. Technologies can support any of
these three types of learning experience:
Conceptual Framework.
• METHODOLOGY. This study will use the Quantitative Method, descriptive
correlational design which involves basic gathering of data like online
instructional strategies used by teachers with its aim of presenting factual,
accurate, and systematic interpretation.
• Statistical Treatment. All the contributing factors in Part I: Profile of the
Respondents will be treated using the Frequency Distribution Percentage. The
Part II: Online Strategies In Teaching Music, Arts, Physical
Education, And Health Among Secondary Schools In Surigao City will be treated
using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation which determines the relationship
of the profile to the online strategies used.
