Complex Number System Study Guide

This study guide provides an overview of topics covered in Chapter 1 of Conway's Functions of One Complex Variable. The chapter introduces the complex number system, including: representation of complex numbers, operations of addition and multiplication, modulus, and ordering. It also discusses the geometric relationship between complex numbers and the complex plane, including polar representation and lines/half-planes. Later sections cover roots of complex numbers, and representations of the extended complex plane.

Study Guide I 1

Chapter I. The Complex Number System

Study Guide
The following is a brief list of topics covered in Chapter I of Conway’s Functions of One Complex
Variable, 2nd edition. This list is not meant to be comprehensive, but only gives a list of several
important topics. You should also carefully study the proofs given in class and the homework
problems.

Section I.1. The Real Number System.

The real numbers, ordering of a field, Law of Trichotomy, Axiom of Completeness, there is only one
complete ordered field (up to isomorphism).

Section I.2. The Field of the Complex Numbers.

The complex numbers (addition and multiplication), real part, imaginary part, “C is a two dimen-
sional extension field of R,” absolute value/modulus, conjugate.

Supplement. Ordering the Complex Numbers.

Ordered field, inequalities in ordered fields (Theorems 1 and 2), proof that C is not an ordered field,
lexicographic ordering of C, well-ordering, the Well-Ordering Principle.

Section I.3. The Complex Plane.

Geometric relationship between R2 and C, Parallelogram Law of Addition, norm and metric on C,
Triangle Inequality, completeness of C in terms of Cauchy sequences.

Section I.4. Polar Representation and Roots of Complex Numbers.

An argument of a complex number, multiplication of complex numbers in polar form, de Moivre’s
Formula, nth roots of a complex number (in particular, nth roots of unity.

Section I.5. Lines and Half Planes in the Complex Plane.

Equation of a line in C, “direction vector” and “translation vector” of a line in C, half-plane in C.

Supplement. The Ilief-Sendov Conjecture.

Gauss-Lucas Theorem, Fundamental Theorem of Algebra, a circle which contains all of the zeros of
polynomial P also contains all of the zeros of P 0 (Corollary 2), centroid of zeros of a polynomial,
the centroid of the zeros of a polynomial P is the same as the centroid of the zeros of P 0 , the
Ilieff-Sendov Conjecture, the Goodman-Rahman-Ratti Conjecture.

Section I.6. The Extended Plane and its Spherical Representation.

Extended complex plane C∞ , stereographic projections, the metric on C∞ .
