Q1. What is constellations?-
Ans. 1. Groups of stars forming different patterns are
called constellations. Example – Great Bear, Big Dipper,
Scorpius etc.
Q2. What is galaxy?
Ans.2. Millions of stars together form a group called
galaxy. There are millions of galaxies in the universe. Our
sun belongs to Milky Way Galaxy.
Q3. How long does the moon take to go round the earth
once?
Ans.3. Moon revolves round the earth once in 27 days
and 8 hours. During this period, it also rotates or spins on
its own axis. This means that its period of rotation and
revolution are the same.
Q4. What is an artificial satellite?
Ans.4. An object designed by human being to revolve
around the earth or any other heavenly body is called an
artificial satellite. They are carried into space by rockets.
Q5. What are asteroids?
Ans.5. Millions of small celestial bodies revolving around
the sun between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter are called
asteroids or small planets.
C. Answer the following questions in not more than 40
words-
Q1. Why are the pointers important to navigators?
Ans.1. Big Dipper (Saptrishi) consists of seven stars,
among those seven two are pointers which always point
towards the pole star (North Star or Polaris) and is
directly above the North Pole. This helped navigators to
determine the north direction before the invention of
magnetic compass.
Q2. What is Milky Way Galaxy?
Ans.2. There are millions of galaxies in the universe.
Scientists have given different names to them. Our sun
belongs to a galaxy called Milky Way Galaxy or Akash
Ganga.
Milky Way Galaxy is a band of stars in our galaxy. It has
got its name from the same whitish band.
Q3. How can you recognize the planets Venus, Mars and
Saturn in the sky?
Ans.3. (a) Venus- It can be easily recognized as it is a
brightest planet.
(b) Mars- It looks red, thus it can be easily recognized as
the red planet.
(c) Saturn- When we look through a telescope, we can
see rings around the planet. Thus it also can be easily
recognized.
Q4. What are shooting stars?
Ans.4. Meteoroids are the small pieces of rocks and dust
which revolve around the sun. When they enter the
earth’s atmosphere, they start burning which cause to a
flash of light while falling. These stars are called shooting
stars.
