Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This study will delve deep on the effects of Facebook on Interpersonal

Communication among Grade 12- HUMSS Students in AMACC. This chapter will focus

on introduction tackling the background of its study as well as a variety of questions

regarding the significance towards the proponents, students, school and future

researchers. This will also discuss both the hypothesis of the study and its scope and

eventually leading to the systematic framework of both conceptual and theoretical in the

later sections.

Introduction

Communication is one of the basic needs of our lives. People communicate to satisfy

our needs. Interpersonal Communication means using both verbal and non-verbal

messages to exchange meanings and emotion between two or more people.

Frequently, verbal and non-verbal messages contradict each other, and when it

happens, the non-verbal message is most likely to be practice.

With the change of communication trend, society required less real life interaction

with others. The mobile devices have become the medium and communication channel

between people. With this, many social media apps have risen and became popular to

the people. Based on the statistics gathered by Statista (2019) Facebook is currently

the largest online social network in the world and plays an active role in connecting

people from distinct geographical regions and with diverse cultural backgrounds. It

became a powerful communication tool which is a better way to interact with other

people than any other applications, but it also affects every individual’s way of

communication. The progression of Facebook affords us global connectedness.

On the other hand, Berlinger (2000) states that,” Virtual life experience can blind us

the importance of human contact we need for our physical, psychological and social

well-being”. The more time users spent online, the less they spent with authentic

relationship. Unfortunately, face to face communication is lacking in online mediums.

The tendency for this site to discourage traditional, face to face human interactions may

be inhibiting individuals’ interpersonal skills. Most of the people just rely on using

Facebook which leads them on not having self-esteem to talk anybody in person.

According to Haythornthwaite (2010), online interaction have many benefits, but

some scholars are saying as the learning of relational skills continues, people who rely

on online relationships are losing the ability to interact with others in real life. The

inability to effectively communicate may harm the Interpersonal Communication skills of

young adults. This can potentially impact family relationship, socialization, school

performance and even employment.

When interpersonal communication skills are depleted, conflict resolution and

problem solving skills may also decrease. The increase of adolescence reliance to

technology for communication with the declination of Face to face interaction will result

in decreased ability to handle real-life conflicts.

Many observers and researchers believe that due to increase in the usage of

Facebook site, people are become the victims of lower self-esteem and self-growth.

Which only means that too much use of Facebook can deeply affect one’s self; mental,

emotional and social life aspects of a person could be lower.

Based on the article “How Facebook’s new Business platform changes the Global

Business Ecosystem” written by Haydn Shaughnessy in 2011, Recently Facebook has

not been a communication platform where users can share and exchange personal

experiences, but it has become a platform where business can provide customer

service and promotions. Drawing conclusions from this, the users’ habits are on the

edge of being addict on using Facebook.

Unknowingly, some people are using Facebook to escape personal problems such

as depressions and stress. Sharing personal status on Facebook is one of the ways to

express their feelings and emotions when they have no one to talk with or no one to

lean on. These peoples tend to find more relief in using Facebook.

In addition, the active users be likely to use Facebook as a substitution of

communication when being away from family or friends. Some Facebook users use

Facebook as a device to get in touch with family. Facebook makes both the distance

and the closeness between people (Beebe and Redmond, 2005). Inside the house,

when most of the family members use Facebook too much, that leads them lack of

communicating with each other’s face to face and this supports the statement that

Facebook could make the closeness into distance. When one of the family members is

abroad, the others use Facebook to still have a contact with them which supports the

statement that Facebook makes the distance to be closer. The freely self-disclosed and

personal status updates as one’s emotion changes may influence how one restrain

emotion to family and friends.

This study is uniquely done in both qualitative and quantitative method, providing

explanations and rationales behind users’ behaviors. The result can help to understand

the effects of excessive online activities on Interpersonal communication skills and

relationship. This paper can be used for further deep insights analysis in various

aspects of communication and for organizations that would like to explore in using

virtual communication and relationship development.

Background of the Study

Nowadays, most of the people uses Facebook as a communication tool to socialize

among other people over the world. It is the most popular and commonly used online

social network website, has created passion among Filipinos in modern years.

In February 2004, Mark Zuckerberg launched “the Facebook”, as it is originally

known; the name taken from the sheets of paper distributed to freshmen profiling

students and staffs. Within 24 hours, 1,200 Harvard students signed up, and after one

month, over half of the undergraduate population had an account in Facebook.

Facebook have been known to be one of the most influential social media app due to

its features that really caught people’s attention. With this, people tend to choose it in

terms of socializing and have a lesser face to face interaction. Many users got so

addicted to Facebook and spend so much time on using it.

According to Lampe (2006), “Facebook may foster relationship building by allowing

users to track other members of their community”. It states that Facebook is a helpful

tool to make interaction within the people of a certain community. Inhabitants of a

particular community are able to build strong relationship through the use of Facebook.

Facebook is said to be a platform where the users can express feelings and thoughts

to his friends and to the world which also allows him to see the others’ as well. It is

where people can social without actually socializing. The relationships that already have

been established offline would be stabilized on Facebook.

According to Technological Determinism, Social Penetration and UGT, there are

reasons beyond such behaviors of using Facebook. Since social networking sites have

been introduced, less face to face communication is required as well as other source of

information. Users used these sites as a communication channel with other people,

daily news updates and knowledge.

Facebook have changed the way people communicate to each other, it is convenient

and very fast. Facebook is the new technology and it changed us.

Theoretical Framework

The Theoretical Framework is the set of theories designed to explain, understand or

predict the phenomena gathered for the study as well as adding extensive knowledge to

the structure as the study to strengthen its ideas and arguments.

According to Dual Factor Theory explains the Psychological theory. This theory

states the primary drivers of Facebook use: belongingness and self-presentation.

Studies have identified certain benefits and advantages of intensive use of Facebook.

For instance, intensity of Facebook use is positively linked to student’s life satisfaction,

social trust, civic engagement, and political participation. Furthermore, updating one’s

Facebook status has been found to reduce loneliness by increasing users’ daily social

connectedness.

Media Ecology Theory aims to understand the social impact of Technology and

Communication. It claims that media act directly to shape and organize culture. Media

Ecology or the study of how Media and communication processes influence human

perception, feeling, understanding, and value, is focused around communication

studies. Marshall McLuhan, the proponent of the Theory noted that media have

revolutionized society and society quickly become reliant on these communication

technologies. Media connects the world into a “Global Village”, where it can tie anyone

around the globe into a single social, cultural, political and economic system. As a

result, we have the ability to receive information instantaneously.

Conceptual Framework

Conceptual Framework is the researcher’s understanding of how the particular

variables in this study connect with each other, as well as giving prior knowledge and

observation on the subject of the research.

Independent Dependent Variable

Variable Interpersonal
Facebook communication

The independent variable is Facebook due to the fact that it does not rely on the

interpersonal communication. And the dependent variable is the interpersonal

communication because it is the variable that is being measured or tested.

Statement of the Problem

Facebook is used by almost everyone who prefer to communicate with each other.

This is highly important to know the influence of this site on interpersonal

communication especially on those participants that do not feel the need to engage in

face to face communication when using Facebook. The study aims to indicate the

problems and to provide suitable solutions so that face to face communication will not

be lost.

This research also aims to answer more specific questions as stated below:

Questions:
