Civil Engineering Live Load Calculations

The document assigns Ahmed Khushal a project design assignment to determine the calculation methods for corridors, kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, and parking with vehicles using the International Building Code and American Society of Civil Engineering standards. It provides information on uniform and concentrated live loads from the IBC and reductions allowed. Specifically, it states that parking with vehicles can be designed for 40 psf according to several codes, bathrooms/toilet rooms should use 60 psf from ASCE 7-10 or can be designed for 100 psf, and living rooms should use 40 psf or 2 kn/m2. Tables from IBC and ASCE are referenced.

Project Design Assignment

Live Loads IBC Section 1607
Uniform Live Loads.
The live loads used in the design of building and other structures shall be the maximum
loads. But in no case be less than the minimum uniformly distributed unit loads required
by Table 1607.1

Concentrated Loads
Floors and other similar surfaces shall be designed to support the uniformly distributed
live loads. Or the concentrated load given in Table 1607.1

Reduction in Live loads

The minimum uniformly distributed live loads Lo in Table 1607.1 are allowed to be
reduced as bellow.

Members for which a value of Kll AT is 37.16 m2 or more are allowed to be designed for
a reduced live load in accordance with the following equation
 Parking with vehicles (Garages)

As per IBC 2006 =40psf

ASCE 7-05 = 40psf

IBC 2003 = 50psf

For the garages with passenger vehicles only 40 psf.

 Bathrooms/Toilet Room Live Load

Table 4-1 of ASCE 7-10 provides 60 psf for toilet rooms. We can design for 100 psf as well
without hesitation.

 Living rooms

Live loads for living room should be 40 psf or 2 kn/m2
