Assignment 2
Process Control and P&ID
The focuses of this assignment are to:
Develop the skills to prepare decent Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) with
appropriate process instrumentations and control systems.
Develop the skills to develop decent control strategy / philosophy for the processes.
(A) Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (Group) (55 marks)
Prepare Piping & Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) for the process based on the latest process flow
diagram (PFD).
The P&ID must strictly follow the requirements shown in the drawing template provided and the
basic requirements as listed below. The P&ID will be evaluated based on (but not limited to) the
accuracy of the information, appropriate and consistent designation of symbols / units /
instrumentations / lines, appropriate labeling of piping lines, valves and equipment, use of sound
and reasonable control system, and overall presentation. Many of the requirements for P&ID are
similar to PFD, which you can refer to, in the basic requirements for PFD in previous assignment
of your Plant Design I. The following are the modification / addition to that requirements.
Process and Plant Design 1
Basic Requirements for P&ID:
Stream Table is not required for P&ID.
Stream lines are not labelled (in a diamond box), instead each line has specific piping number
(refer to “Line Numbering” in the Symbols, Legend and Abbreviations Drawing in the drawing
template), which will be assessed in your individual assignment, and should be included in your
P&ID. Piping details are only required for the systems covered in the individual assignment,
and do not extend to the entire plant.
All symbols / abbreviations used in the P&ID must be similar to the Symbols, Legend and
Abbreviations drawing.
A table for Instrument Identifiers must be included in the Symbols, Legend and Abbreviations
drawing.
Each equipment, instrument and valve must be labelled with unique tag number.
Basic process control systems should be assigned appropriately. Additionally, independent
safety instrumented systems (e.g. alarms, safety trip, emergency valves) should be assigned
appropriately for critical units / scenarios (e.g. in the event of thermal runaway)
All pressure vessels must come with pressure relief valve / rupture disk. All pressure relief
valves symbols should include the information on set point.
Isolation valves, drain valves, sampling port, vents, bypass lines (for startup, shutdown) should
be included in appropriate location. Information on normally open or close should be included.
Hand switch (with interlocks, if possible) should be included for all mechanically driven
equipment (e.g. pump, compressor, stirrer, turbine etc.).
Level diagram(s) must be included for all units that come with level control. Level diagrams
should not be included for drawings with no level control.
The level of details for process equipment should be higher than that of PFD, with indication of
type of heat exchanger used, internals of columns etc.
Details of utilities line (e.g. MPS, CWS etc.) should be included.
Equipment table complete with size, heat transfer area or capacity (depending on the type of
equipment), service and design conditions must be included in the P&ID as shown in the
drawing template provided. Take note that the information for equipment table in P&ID is
different from that in a PFD.
Process and Plant Design 2
(B) Control Strategy / Philosophy (Individual) (45 marks)
Please clearly indicate the student name and ID for each core system.
Each member is to select a different core system from the process as identified in Plant Design I for
individual work. The core system selected by each individual must the different from the system
he/she did in Plant Design I (manual calculation). Ideally, a system should involve a major equipment
(e.g. reactor, distillation unit) and two minor equipment (e.g. pump, heat exchanger).
Basic Requirements for Control Strategy / Philosophy:
Brief description of system (including P&ID) considered.
Clear presentation of control loop (BPCS) in table form, with reasonable and clear explanation
for each control loop / system. In the case of continuous control (e.g. PID), while in the case of
batch control (e.g. PSA), control procedures / logic for the batch process should be outlined.
The table should have the following information:
Instruments and valves involved
Objectives of control loop
Controlled and manipulated variables
Type of control strategy (i.e. split ratio, feedback, feedforward, cascade control)
Set point and other information (e.g. ratio, override select logic)
Clear presentation of Safety Instrumented System (SIS) in table form. This should include:
Set point of the primary alarm and secondary safety trip
The details of actions taken for the trip, e.g. shutdown pump, actuate valve
List of relief valves / rupture disk with set point.
Cause and Effect Matrix for Safety Instrumented / Interlock system.
Correct and clear assignment of piping details, with calculation for sizing of pipes.
The individual assignment will be evaluated based on (but not limited to) the accuracy of the
information, quality of P&ID, definition of control objectives, use of sound and reasonable control
system / control loop, sizing of piping lines, Cause & Effect Matrix, and overall presentation.
Process and Plant Design 3
