Ultrasonic Testing Procedure for Welding

This 3-page document provides the specific procedure for ultrasonic testing of structural welds. It outlines 18 items that describe: 1) the material being tested, 2) weld details, 3) joint types, 4) thickness ranges, 5) required probes, 6) flaw detection equipment, 7) surface preparation, 8) test ranges, 9) sensitivity settings, 10) reference blocks, 11) sizing techniques, 12) required couplants, 13) coaxial cable lengths, 14) acceptance criteria, 15) maximum testing temperatures, 16) required scanning patterns, 17) calibration requirements, and 18) general references. The procedure was prepared by an ASNT Level III ultrasonic testing professional.

Note:
1. Probe angle selected shall be such that the ultrasound
beam strikes bevel closest to 900.
2. Probe sizes stated above are minimum dimensions.
3. Probe sizes circular or rectangular with dimensions of
12.5 mm – 25.0 mm are preferred.
4. Test frequency range of 2.0 – 2.5 MHz is approved,
provided probe dimensions meet requirements of Note 3.
5. In all cases the probe shall seat completely on test
surface.

1. Setting shall be based on response from 1.6 mm square
buttress notches for near-surface and surface breaking
discontinuities.
2. For internal discontinuities, sensitivity setting shall
be based on response from 1.6 mm side drilled hole.
Note: Additional 20 to 35db to be added for scanning
depending on the sound path length. Evaluation shall be
performed with respect to the reference level.
