Question 1 (Suggested Time: 20 Minutes) Marks: 15


When Stéphane plays chess against his favorite computer program, he wins with probability 0.60, loses
with probability 0.10, and 30% of the games result is a draw. Assume independence.
a. Find the probability that Stéphane wins 7 games, if he plays 10 games?

b. Find the probability that Stéphane wins at least 8 games, if he plays 12 games?

c. Find the probability that Stéphane loses 6 games, if he plays 10 games?

Question 2 (Suggested Time: 20 Minutes) Marks: 5+5=10

A company that sells mail-order computer systems needs to know something about typical weekly sales
in order to plan inventory and staffing. The company selects 15 weeks at random from the past year
and obtains the data (thousands of dollars) shown below:

Weekly sales 191, 222, 222, 223, 223, 225, 227, 228, 229, 232, 234, 234, 236, 244, 253

a. What are the mean and median weekly sales for the company?

b. What is the mode for the data? Do you think the mode is a good measure of typical weekly
sales? Why or why not

Question 3 (Suggested Time: 30 Minutes) Marks: 1+2+2=5

The marks obtained by 9 students are given below.
