Case of study

Illegality is one of the most important problems Colombia has suffered during the last 50
years. It has fallen into an illegality trap. What recommendations do you make to take the
country out of this trap? Explain carefully your argument.

In the first place, it is necessary to see where the problems of illegality come from, why
they have been generated and how the different governments have tried to fight them over
the years, in order to be able to give certain recommendations that can get Colombia out of
this complicated situation.
From my point of view, the main problem lies in the culture of running over that is rooted
in Colombians. Ours is a very unequal country, where not all have been offered the same
opportunities and this gives rise to those who have not been favored by natural selection,
illegally observe an opportunity to emerge and achieve great amounts of money, which is
what we have been taught as a society, and is the best. Another important point is the
violence that has been experienced in many abandoned regions of the country, which
allows us to see how the institutions that have been in charge are weak and reveals a point
of weakness in them, thus allowing illegality to expand in these places. It is important to
recognize that a general problem is the neutralization of the illegal in everyday life, which
has allowed certain types of activities to be standardized and in this way that what was
initially “minimal” and allowed, has grown in size and now it can be considered a very
heinous action. Finally, if the State is corrupt, promotes illegality and is not transparent,
what can the society to which they must lead by example do?
In 2017, 35% of Colombian GDP was generated by the illegal economy, which allows us to
analyze how these types of activities not only contribute great money to the country's
economy, but are also expanding instead of contracting. It can be seen that the Colombian
government is characterized by impunity and corruption, which allows us to say that the
type of policies or laws that have been implemented to counter illegality are neither
sufficient nor adequate. They are rather permissive and usually favor the corrupt or those
who do not do things the legal way.
The country must work hard to recognize the population, its possibilities, its education and
its way to contribute to the local economy. If there is a state that favors both rural and urban
areas, people who believed or saw that they did not have a level playing field can start
motivating themselves. It is also important that education improves in quality, a well-
educated country is a country that cannot consider doing actions that are not ethical or
moral, since it will have much more important ideas in its head. Employment and
development opportunities must also be generated so that these people do not see illegality
as an option to emerge. And lastly, it is necessary that the government is a good example
for the community and shows that everything illegal can be harshly penalized, but most
importantly, that there is no corruption within them.
