CHARACTERS: JAGDISH, VINESH

LOCATION: VINESH’S POLICE SUV

Audio Recording- Vinesh... the case is solved. I've found out the culprit…. Yes Vinesh.

JAGDISH

Do you have a cigarette?

VINESH

I never used to smoke.

JAGDISH

Sorry! Name... Again? I...

VINESH

Vinesh, your closest friend, Police Commissioner.

Vinesh pointing to the spot of Jagdish’s accident

VINESH

This is where, fourteen days before. One refrigerator fell off to the road, during on
a house shifting. Your jeep was just, behind it.

All of a sudden, when you turned the vehicle... it had hit there, and toppled over.

As I told you, you were talking over the phone, with me.

Vinesh’s phone rings. A call from his superior. Jagdish is still puzzled.

VINESH

Good evening sir, I will come. By what time sir? Okay. Yes. Got discharged today only. Will
be able to take charge, with in two days. Yes sir, I understand. Sir.

Vinesh ends the conversation, turns to Jagdish.

VINESH

State government and media is closely watching... on the murder of a police officer. There
was.. lots of pressure on us, on both, you and me. Not was. It is!

When you were in the hospital, there were innumerable phone calls and mails, on
the status of the case. It was in the midst of us, everywhere.

If we do not reach a conclusion to the case, that will affect our career. Among the superiors,
few were apprehensive on that. But you had solved that case, just before the accident.

From where we departed on meeting, to till here... in between this distance.

Some where there is a vital evidence, which you had found out. A vital clue...

The whole state was following this case... which was proven also.

Before, bringing it to light, what it is, before revealing the culprit... Accident!

JAGDISH

I don't remember. Nothing at all.

VINESH

On that drive, there are no incoming calls, in your call list. The last outgoing call, was for me.
For a twenty minutes distance, you took, more than forty five minutes. Which means, in
between something had happened?

One halt, one deviation, or maybe not, a slowing down. Whatever it may be, in that gap, this
case was proven.

CHARACTERS: JAGDISH, VINESH, TENANT,SECURITY GUARD, POLICE MAN

LOCATION: JAGDISH’S APARTMENT

Vinesh tells the Police Man

VINESH

Hold the bag and take sir, to the flat.

POLICE MAN

Yes, sir.

VINESH

All the medicines are in the bag, the timings are written on it. Do not forget.
Nobody should be allowed to the apartment, until I come. Is it clear to you?
Vinesh tells Jagdish

He will be here... Constable Shivan.

One accident. Now, you are perfectly all right in front of all, expect doctors and me. That is
why no visitors were allowed at the hospital.

Do I have to come? There is a meeting, already late now.

JAGDISH

Not required.

VINESH

We will talk, till then, sleep well.

If you need anything, call me.

JAGDISH

There... ln that flat, is there anyone, along with me? I mean, do I live with somebody?

VINESH

No.

Vinesh leaves. Jagdish walks with the Police Man to his apartment. His phone receives a
message from Kamal, checks his phone and continues walking.

MESSAGE ON PHONE

Hi Jagdish, How are you? Man, I came know about the news now. When you are discharged,
will come to your house. You take rest. I'm so sorry, I'm in Dubai, and I'll catch you, once I'm
back.

Jagdish continues to walk. However, a tenant of the same apartment comes up to him.

TENANT

Sir, Is it a good time to talk? Sorry, never intended, to talk this matter... soon as you came,
discharged. As you know, after your accident everyone over here was shaken.
Especially women and children. Sir, as you know. The rule, for “only family” was nullified,
just because... you were a police officer and there by the safety at the flat. However, this
is... Either someone will come, to assault you. Or else, they will come threatening.

Other than this.

After drinking, sir, you create havoc here. Last month, after drinking, you were using foul
language... To the wife of Narayanan sir.

POLICE MAN

Don’t mention that. That is all previous issues. Start the topic, on why you are here.

TENANT

Nevertheless, we have to mention the past, which is why I came here.

Sir, if you have a visitor, without writing on the register... you straight away enter.

Tenant calls out to the security guard.

TENANT

Isn't that correct, Shivan!

GUARD

On telling him to write, he will bounce on me.

TENANT

We are not used to these kind of things. We believe... without much complications in life,
we must live here. Therefore, what we have to tell is. Not this association alone... Everybody
in this complex are fed up with you.

Sir, you must vacate from here.

Jagdish slightly nods his head and walks towards his apartment.

CHARACTERS: JAGDISH, VINESH, SAJEEV (JOURNALIST), KAMAL

LOCATION: VINESH’S POLICE SUV

Next morning. Vinesh and Jagdish are in Vinesh’s SUV. Vinesh pointing to a small shop by
the road.
VINESH

That shop... Your routine halt to buy cigarettes. Go and get one. See, whether, you get
something, from his conversation. Something.

Maybe, you might have stopped here, before the accident. In case, we might get a big clue
from him.

JAGDISH

Which is the cigarette?

VINESH

The moment, he sees you, he'll take it out.

Jagdish reluctantly gets out of the SUV and walks towards the shop. Sajeev, a prominent
journalist, calls Jagdish on the way to the shop. Phone rings. Jagdish answers the phone.

SAJEEV

Hello Sir. I'm Sajeev. Remember me?

JAGDISH

Who?

SAJEEV

Sajeev, from Malay News. Knew you are discharged. As I was busy... I could not come to the
hospital and meet you.

Sir, there is a rumour that the investigation is over... The Home minister, also, hinted on
that. If it is so, the first information should be given to us, sir.

When did you come from hospital?

JAGDISH

Yesterday.

Interrupting their conversation, a car pulls over to him. Kamal. Jagdish, not knowing the car,
ends his call and steps back from the car.

KAMAL
Hey! Jagdish, you are back! Why haven’t you called?

JAGDISH

I was only discharged yesterday.

KAMAL

Opened two more international services… crazy schedule. For the last two weeks, literally I
was in the sky. Couldn't come to hospital, but you look good man!

JAGDISH

Thanks.

Kamal pointing to the bruise on Jagdish’s head.

KAMAL

Hey, that is new! Anyway one o'clock to Dubai. Got to rush, pop in, I'll drop you some place.

JAGDISH

No, I have my ride.

KAMAL

I'll drop in, once I land. It's been a while.

Kamal waves at Jagdish and drives away. Vinesh drives over to Jagdish. Jagdish enters the
car understanding nothing and looked puzzled.

VINESH

Who was that?

JAGDISH

I don't know.

VINESH

Who called you, over the phone?

JAGDISH
One TV guy, Sajeev. Enquired about the case... Morning also, there was a call from a
journalist.

VINESH

Don't answer anything, they will dig deep. Ignore them... saying you are in a meeting or
something.

Did he say anything?

JAGDISH

Whatever he says I will not understand anything. Because, I don't know what is happening.
On one side, the accident and memory loss. On the other hand, telling me to vacate from
the flat. Some are telling I'm a drunkard.

You tell me, to report it to you, what that is heard from the streets?

I feel like a puppet.

VINESH

Relax!

Give it some time, you will remember. I need to know, not who they are, but I need to
know, why?

JAGDISH

All the people around me. Who they are to me? I don't know, one, who is in front of me,
Including you! Only questions are before me.

Must find answers for all, they only will I know who I'm.

Now I need an answer, for a big question before me. Who am I?

VINESH

Jagdish Raj. Assistant Commissioner of Police, KL city. What you were looking for
is crime number, 1476/ 2020.

Whatever details you had found out, is in the case dairy.

CHARACTERS: JAGDISH, VINESH

LOCATION: VINESH’S OFFICE

Jagdish on completely reading the case diary understands that Suraj was a Police Officer and
moreover his best friend. Jagdish sitting on the couch has his head in his arms. Vinesh is
sitting opposite Jagdish sipping on his coffee.

JAGDISH

Shall I go somewhere? I will abstain, from here for few days.

VINESH

Do you think he will go from your heart, if you do like that? He will be there in
every corner of your life... even if, you are here, or where ever you are.

There will be lot of moments, which he had given us. We cannot escape, from it. No matter,
how far we go from it. I cannot think he is no more, as a reality.

JAGDISH

I need to know how Suraj was murdered...

I know I'm never a good police officer... and I don't know how a
good police officer should be.

I am astonished, on thinking how a Police Commissioner label came to me.

VINESH

Jagdish... However, it may be, everywhere... I know, everybody considers it is not more than
a premium status symbol.

But standing here... it is the biggest honor one can achieve in the police force. I know
myself, for a below average, officer like me, this is..

Jagdish slowly and mildly nods his head in approval. Vinesh briefs him more on Suraj’s
murder. Jadgish listens carefully to picture the murder from a third man’s eye. Suraj was
murdered outside his office while talking on his phone.

VINESH

A gun shot piercing the heart, bullet entered through the left chest.
Exits through the lower back. Lungs had also been penetrated. On the wound, the residue of
the gunpowder is too low. This accounts for a long distance firing.

JAGDISH

You might have got the bullet from the crime scene, haven't you?

VINESH
No Jagdish, the cartridge is missing… searched for it many times everywhere.
Checked outside his office, in a fifty meter radius. If the cartridge moved
above fifty meters... it will not be lost in the commotion of the attack.

I think that the cartridge would have been removed from the scene… by someone.

JAGDISH

How long, did our force take, to secure the entire scene?

VINESH

Almost an hour.

JAGDISH

Without finding the cartridge, we cannot confirm, what kind of gun was used.

(Jagdish excitedly and eager)

Vinesh, let's do research on fire arms… From the wound in the victim's body, we can
identify, what is the kind of gun was used.

I've read about it in the case diary and I can start today. That is all, simply written in the
diary, Vinesh.

In many cases whichever may be the gun, the wound on the victim's body
will appear similar. We cannot confirm anything, without getting the cartridge.

But the victim...

Vinesh interrupts Jagdish and gestures him to stop.

VINESH

(Pissed off) What the hell? Victim... victim... Don't you know he has got a name? Did you
forget that also? He is not just a 'bloody victim'. Show the same respect when he was alive!

Is that clear? (Pauses)

JAGDISH

Yes.. Yes Vinesh.

Do you have the list of people who were present at the scene?

VINESH

Yes, 22 police officers, including constables. Then public, between 20 to 30.

You need to take the statement from all, check the video footage, and
identify everyone from the public. Police officers you will meet personally... and check the
rest.

Wherever they are, You must get the statements of all, within three days.

JAGDISH

OK.

VINESH

As per the experts... the cartridge, had come from a distance of 100 to 200 meters from
a highly sophisticated rifle, by an expert shooter.

What they said is, from the angle of the wound in the body... and the distance mentioned.
It might be from a building on the left side of the office... and that too
from fifth or sixth floor.

JAGDISH

In that case, we are not mistaken.

VINESH

No. Exactly, from a building in that position, a person had ran from there. This is
a building on dispute among two brothers, no one is staying here.

JAGDISH

I will get the details of them.

VINESH

But, on the day when the incident took place. There are people, who had seen that Kumar,
in the nearby junction.

JAGDISH

Which Kumar?

VINESH

A usual guy, in the gangster list.

CHARACTERS: POLICE INSPECTOR, KUMAR, KUMAR’S WIFE

LOCATION: KUMAR’S HOUSE

Police Inspector and police men in Kumar’s house. Police men manhandling Kumar in front
of wife and kids.

WIFE

Don't sir, please, he is not feeling well.

POLICE INSPECTOR

What were you doing at TR junction on the 15th?

KUMAR

That is where my sister's house is.

POLICE INSPECTOR

Your sister? From there, where did you go?

WIFE

Sir, he came straight here.

POLICE INSPECTOR

You answer only when you are questioned, understand!

From there, straight to Bottle building, is it not?

Who were there, along with you, tell me.

KUMAR

I had seen all this, many times, don't try to put the things in my mouth... what you have in
mind. Sir, no need.

You! Don't touch her. You will never get up!

POLICE INSPECTOR

What did you say?

KUMAR

Leave us alone… sir. Sir.. Leave her alone. Please don’t do anything.

POLICE INSPECTOR

(Trying to misbehave with Kumar’s wife) How is that touching? Is it like this? Or is it like
this?
(mocking Kumar) “Please, don't do anything?!!”

Pull him to the jeep! Come here! Her too!

CHARACTERS: JAGDISH, KUMAR

LOCATION: INETRROGATION ROOM

KUMAR

Sir… I was living in a decent way, by driving taxi. On the death of that police officer, I do not
have any role. If I had, I would have accepted it I don't have any kind of fear.

Sir.. Please... Don't try to trap me in that.

Leaving away everything, I'm going to live for my family again.

JAGDISH

Are you sure you are telling me the truth?

KUMAR

Yes sir. I swear upon my children.

CHARACTERS: JAGDISH, LAKSHMI (POLICE INSPECTOR), SUDAKAR (POLICE INSPECTOR)

LOCATION: BOTTLE BUILDING

JAGDISH

Lakshmi, Go and meet the residents in that apartment, see whether you get some details.

LAKSHMI

Yes sir.

JAGDISH

Take that Sudhakar also with you.

LAKSHMI

I will go, alone.

JAGDISH
I’ve got lot of experience, no need of ego.

SUDAKAR

It seems, no touch anywhere. Foot prints are deliberately removed. See this,
sir, chili powder, so that sniffer dogs don't get the smell.

JAGDISH

Whoever it may be, he is not the first timer. There is an enormous planning behind this.

Sudakar.. Go with Lakshmi.

CHARACTERS: LAKSHMI (POLICE INSPECTOR), SUDAKAR (POLICE INSPECTOR), OLD MAN

(NEIGHBOUR)

LOCATION: OLD MAN’S APARTMENT

Lakshmi and Sudakar interrogating the old man from the apartment near to the Bottle
building.

OLD MAN

That morning, when that police officer got killed, son and family was returning to the US on
that day. So, breakfast was delayed.

While I was standing here, I noticed a car parked over there.

LAKSHMI

About what time?

OLD MAN

Around 11, 11:30 AM. After my son had left from here.

By around, one o'clock, when I came to the balcony. That car was still there. I didn't see
anybody getting in or getting down. But I was just thinking, why that car is there. I haven’t
seen it earlier.

SUDAKAR

Earlier in the morning, when you checked, hadn't been the car over there?

OLD MAN

No.
LAKSHMI

The number of the car, what type of car, anything like that? Do you remember seeing
anybody suspicious?

OLD MAN

No, I didn't pay attention, to all that. It was a big green car. However, I did see someone at
the window of the building. I think an Indian man. Thicker moustache. A boarder face. An
oval shaped.

CHARACTERS: JAGDISH, LAKSHMI (POLICE INSPECTOR), RECEPTIONIST (SHOOTING RANGE)

LOCATION: SHOOTING RANGE

Jagdish showing a picture to the receptionist.

RECEPTIONIST

Yes sir, That's him. Came here, just wanted to see the armoury test.

CHARACTERS: JAGDISH, LAKSHMI (POLICE INSPECTOR), CAPTAIN ROY (MAN IN THE

PICTURE)

LOCATION: JAGDISH’S OFFICE

CAPTAIN ROY

Are you investigating on me, because of a silly fight... with that person at a party?

JAGDISH

I'm interested in your car!

CAPTAIN ROY

Well maintained… no one will say… it is a Mercedes 2015 model.

LAKSHMI

Apart from you Captain, does anyone else use this car? A week before, around 14th or 15th.

CAPTAIN ROY
No body uses this car, except me.

LAKSHMI

Do you know a Kumar? A notorious goon in KL.

CAPTAIN ROY

No.

JAGDISH

Have you been to Chennai... two months back? Seems like, have seen your name in
the passenger list.

CAPTAIN ROY

I was. Parents are over there.

JAGDISH

During the time, you were there. Have you contacted a person like this? (Showing the
picture of Kumar)

CAPTAIN ROY

No.

JAGDISH

Captain… Why did you go to the shooting range?

CAPTAIN ROY

I am a Navy Officer. Who are you to question me? What the hell is all this?!

CHARACTERS: JAGDISH, VINESH

LOCATION: VINESH’S OFFICE

JAGDISH

I have got Kumar, for interrogating him three days. Seems will get some details from him.

VINESH

That navy guy?

JAGDISH

Still on the track, whether, they had seen, any issues had taken place, between Suraj and
him.

VINESH

Is his life so much complicated? I thought he is just a child. I have interacted in that way.

Frankly saying... he used to complain, that he didn't get enough respect from the family.

JAGDISH

Any issues?

VINESH

No. when we find wrong things, scold him... which was never dis-respect. Some of his
activities, some companies of him.

JAGDISH

(Least interested in Vinesh’s talk) These are the statements of those present at the scene of
the crime. There is nothing unusual.

I had contact the Indian Police in Chennai. This is the initial investigation report
of Chennai police. Their stand is, the shootout which occurred there... cannot
be connected to this. That is because, they want to free from this responsibility.

There too, the shooter had used the most modern rifle.

VINESH

If the Chennai police doesn't cooperate. Then we will have to ask, for the assistance of
a centralized agency.

JAGDISH

OK.

This is from Chennai... Similar shooting in India like Hyderabad and from the other metros, it
is on its way.

VINESH

I must meet you later in the evening. Around 8 o'clock. That night we had met there.

Meanwhile, the boss spoke in an irritated tone. There is no effort from the side of the team
that is what he says.

JAGDISH
(Pissed) Then tell him, to do the investigation.

VINESH

No need to blame him, what can he do? When there is pressure from the ministry level.

Suraj’s family had also complained, that there is no developments... since a week has
passed. They are going in for a press meet.

JAGDISH

We have reached two solid suspects. Captain Roy and Kumar. Did no one
notice these developments?

These two, are connected somewhere and somehow.

I'm only asking some more time, to find out that connection.

As far as I'm concerned, the deceased, is not just anyone... to drain out the enthusiasm.

You'll not keep your head down, before anyone. That's my word.

After we left from there, almost after forty five minutes... then came a phone call.
I found the culprit! That means at the time of accident, I knew it.

VINESH

To be very precise, from the moment we parted to the time of the accident. Within that
gap, you found out, who is the culprit.

The case dairy, that was half finished by Jagdish Raj... must be closed by Jagdish Raj.

JAGDISH

I don't know the people, who I had mentioned in that case dairy. I don't know the places. I
don't know myself.

VINESH

There are no individuals in a case dairy, witnesses, evidences... suspects, no need to know,
anyone more than that. To find out a case, it is the instruments, the individuals…
their statements and places.

What is lost is only a memory, not the ability to think. That is more important to strive on in
this case. You can again reach where you have reached before.

During the time of the accident. There was a suggestion. That the investigation must be
carried out by some other officer... I denied that, because I had the confidence.
In other words, the confidence in you, that I have, I do not have with any other officer. As I
told you, nobody knows any detail, about anything... except more than an accident. Except
you, me and the Doctor. For this reason, I maintained a secrecy on it. You are fit to continue
this case, my certificate. I'm also your higher official. Jagdish Raj had taken bigger risks that
this.

JAGDISH

I'm only about to face everyone and everything. I do not know whether I'm prepared to
face, the life of a police officer. I must meet the Doctor who treated me. The men
and incidents which the 'A' knows, 'B' doesn't know. No personal details.

VINESH

In a way, two are entirely different men, in character... attitude and preferences.
But whatever 'A' knows, like the languages learned... skills everything will be remembered
by 'B' like driving, swimming, the games you are familiar with... training you have got. There
will be no problem on this.

Steve Wozniak, one of the founders of Apple computers, lost the memory in a plane crash.
He got it back, within five weeks' time. May be next year, may be next month or tomorrow.

JAGDISH

Do you have examples of those who never recovered?

VINESH

That is also there but less in number. Nevertheless, come on, why do want to think in
a negative way?

JAGDISH

Will I be able to do my work? I mean, the decisions I take... my conclusions will it

be accurate enough?

VINESH

Yes Jagdish.. I believe so

JAGDISH

Hmm

VINESH

There is no other case which had haunted me like this. You must find the answer for that
once again. Before that accident, you must reach it to the vital clue once again.

For me, for you, for him.

On the 18th day, I want the finished case file on my table. It must have the answers
for three questions.
How? Why? And who?

A complete case file with all the answers. “There are my findings. Through those findings I
had reached conclusions.”

This is my dairy with my personal finding for the last eighteen days.

You must read both, at times you must read both intermingled.

By all sense, there is one and only blank page, of the case file... Very last page, you must fill
it. Only you can do it!

Within seventeen days if we do not prove this, some other officer, other than me, will take
the charge of the case. Perhaps, sometimes some other team will assist him, other than you.
I have a desire that it must not happen like that.

JAGDISH

Me too. We had interrogated Captain Roy... and Kumar in a detailed manner.

But nothing turned out in a helpful manner.

Captain Roy was very much there in naval base on the day... of the crime and the day
before.

We must confirm about Kumar once again.

He was released on the condition that he must report... whenever he is asked to. Some of
our informers are also watching him.

All major gangs also have denied the murder. From their past history, they will accept, if at
all they had any role in it. Especially, if it is a violence on account of vengeance.

These are the photos of sharp shooters that we got within ten days. There
are similarities with the sketch we had given, this is from all major cities in Malaysia,
Indonesia, Singapore and India.

Vinesh.. I need one sharp shooter for one day... who’s detained in police custody. Just to
find out their way of working.

Just before restarting, just wanted to meet everyone in my team.

From tomorrow onwards we will have a detailed sessions.

There is only one confusion, no problem with Sudhakar... But Lekshmi, I'm tensed on, how I
used to interact with her?

No idea, how I dealt with everyone. No I don't think anybody had a doubt like that.

I'll do the updating.

VINESH
I have something to tell you.

JAGDISH

What is it?

VINESH

After you arrested Kumar... that Kumar's wife had given a complaint against you... Showing
that your team miss-behaved with her. Anyhow, I had talked with her and
the complaint was taken back. I did that, because it must not create... a bad mark for the
investigation team.

Not because that complaint is irrelevant. That is not the way a police officer must behave to
anyone... not only to an offender.

JAGDISH

OK. I understand what you mean.

Jagdish receives a phone. It is Yamini (Sister). She sounds worried and wants to see him.

JAGDISH

You don't have to come here.

YAMINI

Can you come to Avenue Street by today evening by seven o'clock?

JAGDISH

Today?

YAMINI

Only fifteen minutes will do. It is really urgent brother that is why.

JAGDISH

I will come.

YAMINI

Husband must not know this.

JAGDISH

Ok Yamini.
