Importance of Preconception Care

The document discusses preconception counseling and care. It explains that preconception counseling involves counseling a couple about pregnancy before conception occurs, with the objective of ensuring the woman's health is optimal for a safe pregnancy and delivery. It notes that many developmental processes are completed in the first trimester, so it is often too late to provide advice once a woman first visits an antenatal clinic after conception. Preconception counseling is especially important for women with preexisting medical conditions and those at risk of birth defects.
