Seismic Design: Base Location Guidelines

1) For buildings without basements, the base is located near ground level. 2) If vertical elements are supported at various elevations, the base is at the lowest elevation of these supports. 3) For buildings with basements, the base is located near the grade slab, unless there are loose soils below grade in which case the base is located below grade.

LOCATION OF BASE FOR SEISMIC DESIGN

Building type Location of Base


Building without basement. Near Ground

Where the vertical elements of the seismic force-resisting system The base is the top of these elements
are supported on interior footings or pile caps. the base is the top
of these elements.

Vertical elements are supported at various elevations on the top Lowest elevation of the tops of elements
of footings, pile caps, and perimeter foundation walls. supporting the vertical elements

Building at flat ground with basement. Located near grade slab

Loose/liquefiable soils. Base below grade.

Stiff foundation walls on all sides of the building should extend Above Grade
to the underside of the elevated level considered the base.

Full-Length Exterior Shear Walls. Base at Foundation Level

Where floor levels are not tied to foundation walls. Base may need to be located well below
grade at the foundation level.

If the diaphragm at grade is flexible and does not have The base of the building may need to be
substantial compressive strength. located below grade.

If other buildings with basements are located adjacent to one or it may be appropriate to locate the base at
more sides of a building. the bottom of the basement.

Building on Sloppy Terrain. Preferably, at Lowest Grade.
