Question 3
Managing quality is important to managing costs and customer value. Organisations manage
quality in many different ways. Some firms include quality measures as part of their performance
measurement systems. Others implement total quality management systems to gain quality
accreditation, and some firms regard total quality management as an end in itself. From the
management accounting persepective, quality costs focus on the costs of the quality of
conformance. There are four types of quality costs: Prevention costs, appraisal costs, internal
failure costs and external failure costs.
Discuss the relationship and interactions among the four quality costs and evaluate how Samsung
can make use of that relationship to improve its quality of mobile phones and avoid the
recurrence of Note 7 crisis.
