Basics of Communication
Today’s competitive business landscape has been always the core of various business
concerns, challenges and dilemmas in innovation such as the rise of automation, Internet of
Things (IoT), Big Data, and in the Philippines such are the concerns that affects not just
businesses but also the employees and the potentials of the both the employed and unemployed.
The competitive business landscape has created several opportunities in all sectors while the
concerns aforementioned are being addressed in a gradual manner given that raising the bar for
talent especially in various skills from technical to “soft” skills that are oftentimes confused in
hiring that there is one skill that has always been one of the core issues across industries, and that
is the communication skills.
Communication as defined by Iksan, Effandi, et al. (2012) as information exchange
process using verbal and non-verbal methodologies to receive information and a “two-way”
process always where information and feedback are the two crucial elements in the process and
as innovation challenges rise, the definition of today’s communication is changing as technology
skills in communication has risen requiring literacy in the use. Also, The University of Southern
California Annenberg School of Communications and Journalism (2019) emphasizes the
importance of communication in the management and training of the people in the workplace,
strategic marketing and sales, positive productivity and corporate climate including the
maintenance of increased positive productivity where corporate communication is exercised
using written, spoken and non-spoken communications with various media platforms used
according to Tim Stoberski (July 18, 2019) of Northeastern University .
Social Media’s Rise
Given the importance of communication and its demonstration in the corporate setting,
the use of other communication platforms especially the gadgets (desktop computer, laptops,
smartphones, e-Pads, among others) that there are numerous options that anyone can use to
communicate other than physical communication (face-to-face). In a study conducted by Pew
Research that 7 of 10 Americans are connected with their friends or associates engaged in
content, sharing information and entertainment using social media platforms and in the trend
from their 2005 study until 2018, there is a 67% increase in the usage of the initial platforms
while several social networking platforms are rising over the course of 13 years after the study.
I.e., 5% of US adults use at least one platform and come 2011, the share rose to half of the
population, then 72% use particular type of platform.
