Design Project
A. Introduction
Parts of different shapes (i.e. squares, circles, Xʼs) are traveling down a conveyor belt.
At the end of the conveyor belt are three boxes, with each designated for a specific
shape. As the parts are traveling down the conveyor belt, it is necessary that the parts
are aligned correctly so that the parts fall in their respective boxes. To accomplish this
task, a mechanical device that is able to sort the parts and place them in such a position
that they fall in their respective boxes must be constructed with the help of a computer
vision system and a control computer used for calculating the desired position of the
motor based on the current position and orientation of a particular part on the conveyor.
B. Design Specifications
[Link] design must weigh no more than 40 pounds.
[Link] device may not extend over 1 foot in any direction from the side of the conveyor
belt.
[Link] system must be able to sort at least 10 parts per minute.
[Link] device may not exceed the cost of $1000.
C. Design Concepts
Linear Actuator
The first concept is a linear actuator. How this system works and operates is with a
power system connected to a DC motor, which is connected to the actual actuator. The
power system provides energy for the motor to rotate. The rotation of the motor
subsequently causes the lead nut in the actuator to rotate, whose rotary motion extends
and retracts the lead screw in the actuator. The lead screw extends to apply a certain
force upon an object, thereby pushing it to a certain position.
Rotating Arm
The second concept is a rotating arm. How this system works and operates is with a
power system connected to a DC motor, which is connected to a set of gears. the
power system provides energy for the motor to rotate. Fastened within the gears is
some kind of pole that rotates along with the gears. Connected to the pole is an
extended arm. The rotation of the motor causes the gears to rotate, which
subsequently rotates the pole and extended arm. The arm rotates to move an object in
a circular path to its designated alignment.
Two Rotating Arms
The third concept is a variation of the rotating arm. How this system works and
operates is with a power system connected to a DC motor, which is connected to a set
of gears. the power system provides energy for the motor to rotate. However, contrary
to the second concept, there are two sets of gears and motors, one on each side of the
conveyor belt. Fastened within each set of gears is some kind of pole that rotates along
with the gears. Connected to each pole is an extended arm. Both extended arms are
positioned in the same direction and each system is just a mirror image of the other.
Instead of the arm rotating the object to its designated place in the second concept,
there are two arms that work by “holding” the object in between each arm and
positioning the object to its correct position.
