Deep-Well Pump Overview and Design

Deep-well pumps are used in specialized tankers like chemical and gas carriers. They are centrifugal pumps placed in a well at the bottom of cargo tanks. This placement eliminates the need to prime the pumps and prevents vapor from entering. While more expensive, deep-well pumps allow for quicker discharge times and simpler piping systems compared to other pump types. The drive can be electric or hydraulic, with motors located on deck or submerged in the tanks.

Pumps

1
DEEP-WELL / SUBMERSIBLE PUMPS

•THESE PUMPS ARE USED IN SPECIALIZED TANKERS (EG:

CHEMICAL/ PRODUCT/GAS).

•HERE A PUMP IS PLACED IN THE TANK IN A WELL AT THE

BOTTOM OF THE TANK,

•HENCE THE NAME DEEPWELL PUMP.

•THESE PUMPS ARE CENTRIFUGAL TYPE AND ARE SINGLE

STAGE OR MULTIPLE STAGES DEPENDING ON PRESSURE
REQUIRED ON THE DISCHARGE SIDE.

The deepwell pump
•Cargo discharge pumps onboard gas carriers are generally
deepwell pumps.

•The deepwell pump’s main parts are the pump, shaft, and
mechanical seal, coupling and motor.

• The pump is located at the lowest level inside the cargo tank
pump sump.

•The shaft is located in the discharge pipe from the pump to the
mechanical seal and connected to the coupling.

•The coupling connects the shaft and motor together.

•On top of the cargo dome the top unit with an electric or hydraulic
motor are located.

DEEP-WELL / SUBMERSIBLE PUMPS

•CENTRIFUGAL PUMP ARE CHOSEN AS MAIN DISCHARGE

PUMP BECAUSE OF THEIR RELATIVELY SIMPLE DESIGN AND
HIGH CAPACITIES.

•HOWEVER, THE DISADVANTAGE OF THESE PUMPS ARE THE

NECESSITY TO PRIME, AND INEFFICIENCY IF VAPOR ENTERS
THE PUMP.

•BY PLACING THE PUMP IN THE TANKS BOTH THESE ARE

ELIMINATED.

•THUS USE OF DEEPWELL PUMP THOUGH EXPENSIVE MAKE

FOR QUICKER DISCHARGE TIME AND SIMPLER PIPING
SYSTEMS.

DEEP-WELL / SUBMERSIBLE PUMPS

•DRIVE COULD BE ELECTRIC OR HYDRAULIC WITH DRIVE

MOTORS ON DECK OR SUBMERGED IN TANKS.

•THE SIZE OF THE WELL IS USUALLY LARGE ENOUGH TO

ALLOW THE DISCH LINE OF THE PUMP TO DRAIN IT AND BE
STRIPPED USING A SCREW PUMP OR OTHER SUITABLE
ARRANGEMENT.

•BEARINGS OF THESE PUMPS ARE COOLED AND LUBRICATED

BY THE FLUID BEING DISCHARGE WHICH FLOWS AROUND THE
BEARINGS IN THE DISCHARGE/RISER PIPE
