Script-1
Topic-Modes of Heat Transfer
Set 1: Narrator with expression of curiosity
“Ever wondered why Air conditions are placed at higher level in the room and
Room Heaters at ground level or how we get heat from sun which is so far
from us”
Set 2: Narrator is sitting on a sofa, cup of tea is on the table near him
(background early morning sun)
“Well nothing is more refreshing in morning than a cup of tea”
Picks up the cup “oh!!! Its hot…hot!!” Place the cup on the table
“Although I did not touch tea directly, its heat can be felt on my hand through
the cup… This is a mode of heat transfer called conduction…Here heat is being
transferred by direct contact or I should say molecular contact”
Animation 1 starts: A metal spoon is being heated by a flame on one side. As it
gets heated the spoon starts turning red from the end of the flame and slowly
the red colour moves to the other end. Zoom up to the heating end of the
spoon.
Narrator “For example take a metal spoon and heat one end up….what will
happen??...you will slowly feel the heat on the end you are holding although
heat is being applied to other end…why is that?”
Animation 2 starts: Closely pack molecules with happy face emoji on them.
Flame comes under the molecules and their faces starts turning in to red and
molecules starts bumping into one another.
Narrator “As spoon is heated, its molecule will gain more energy, and vibrate
more. These molecules then bump into nearby molecules and transfer some of
their energy to them”
“That’s why conduction mainly occurs in solid due to close packing of
molecules and metals are considered as good conductor of heat.”
“Ability of material to conduct heat is called as conductivity…..which means
quicker the transfer of heat higher the conductivity”
“So out of glass, water, plastic, air which one has least thermal
conductivity??think about it?
Same set up as set 1
Narrator “Coming back to refreshing morning tea”
Pick up the cup more carefully(Facial expression of carefulness)
“Now what do you do before taking sip of tea??? Right!!! You blow air onto the
surface of tea”
Blows the air onto surface of the tea and takes sip of the tea.
“Now that’s perfect”(Relaxing expression)
“This mode of transfer of heat is called as convection…convection is heat
transfer by movement of fluid such as air or water due to density difference.”
Animation 3 starts: A transparent pot of water is kept on flame. Molecules of
water are shown as spheres in blue colour. As water gets heated the molecules
at the bottom starts changing its colour from blue to red. These red molecules
then starts moving up through spaces between the molecules and as they
move up the molecules present at the top starts moving down.
Narrator “Take an example of pot of water being heated….as its being heated
the molecules near the heat source are getting heated first and since heat
causes increase in movement or randomness of molecules ,so these molecules
moves up and the empty space left by them is filled by relatively cooler
particles from top surface. This process goes on until whole pot of water
becomes hot.”
Set 3: Narrator is sitting on comfy chair on the beach holding cold drink(In
background of afternoon sun)
“ I know that this drink is cold because when I touch it I can feel the coldness
but none of us touched sun but we still say that sun is hot…why is that? Sun is
at 150 million km from us and even though there is no medium between earth
and sun, still we get heat from it…how??
“Well that’s because of radiation which is third form of heat transfer. In
radiation heat is transferred by electromagnetic waves and that’s why it does
not need a medium to travel”
Animation 4: Heater is placed on the ground in the room and person reading
book Is sitting in other corner in blue colour(signifies cold). Red colour waves
starts emitting from the room heater and the waves spread throughout the
room and slowly the person is getting the heat(change in colour from blue to
orange).
“No mass is exchanged and no medium is required in the process of radiation.
The electromagnetic waves are absorbed, reflected, and/or transmitted by the
matter, which comes in the path of the wave.”
MCQ Questions
1. Solids are not heated by convection because:
A. Molecules of solid are not free to move from one place to another
B. molecules of solid only vibrate about fixed position
C. both A and B
D. none of the above
Answer: C Reason-Solids are not heated by convection because the molecules
of a solids are not free to move from one place to another; they can only
vibrate about fixed position
