Advanced English Mini-Courses

 Free, non-credit graduate-level courses in research communication for students whose first
language is not English. They are offered by the Writing Center and taught by English
Language Specialists.
 Priority registration will be given to degree-seeking UNC graduate students and postdoctoral
scholars. Others will be wait-listed until space is available. (See our writing
groups and speaking groups pages for additional opportunities.)
 A certificate of completion may be awarded to students who participate fully in a course if
requested. There are no grades for these courses, and they will not appear on any UNC
transcripts.

Spring Semester Courses

Academic Writing for Graduate Students


This course will provide an overview of the stylistic features of academic writing at the graduate
level. It will focus on the important linguistic features and on common strategies for organizing
information. Emphasis will be placed on students developing familiarity with the writing style of their
own academic disciplines. Course text: Academic Writing for Graduate Students. Degree-seeking
UNC graduate students and postdoctoral scholars have priority registration. Others will be placed on
a waiting list until space is available.

Section 1 (Six-week format): Wednesdays, January 15 – February 19, 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM

Section 2 (Three-week format): Tuesdays and Thursdays, February 11-29, 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM
(Registration closed.)
Section 3 (Three-week format): Mondays and Wednesdays, March 30-April 15, 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM

Research Presentation Skills
This course will help non-native English speaking scholars prepare a presentation of their research
for a conference, a class, or other presentation occasions. The course will focus on the language of
effective presentations, with tips for engaging the audience, for keeping their attention, for managing
questions and discussion periods, and general pronunciation feedback. Graduate students and
postdoctoral scholars have priority registration. Visiting scholars will be able to join the course if
space is available.
