The Practice of Adoption: History, Trends, and Social Context

In 2003, Baden suggested that adoption is everywhere and it is practiced

and processed even in the old times it is just been upgraded to cope with the

modern world. But there are issues that aren’t tackled or popular with the

common people or the whole society. There are closed cases on adoption

and the lack of psychological involvement to the said issues. There are many

fields that adoption related lacks such as: social work, psychiatry, law and etc.

There are a lot of situation where they are needed the most, they must be

covered that only these fields can be fixed.

There are different kinds of adoption; there are local and international

adoption. The local is where they adopt on the same state or country and the

second one is where they go to a different country to foster children with

different race and ethnicity and they will soon be brought to the fostered

family’s country. In the US adoption is so rich because of the legality of gay

marriage, a lot of same sex couple would like to have a child of their own

since surrigation is a expensive process they will turn to adoption. There is

kind of adoption called “special needs adoption” where the child will be

adopted in the age of 5 and older and is belong to a sibling group. The

difficulty of doing a special needs adoption is where the child is already aware

on his/her well-being. Him or her wouldn’t want to be adopted without their

siblings, if they are separated with each other will cause a big problem. With

the said situation the child might show a behavioral, physical and

developmental issue (Baden, 2003).

Baden also cited that there are different ways and kinds of adoption are

tackled in this paper including the adoption of the spouse’s child/children.

Society and families must be open to this issue and they must be informed by

sharing of other parents or being open about the idea of adoption. Open

adoption helped a lot of families to build a strong connection and relationship

with their child and other families who have the same situation. The

participation of every person that is included or related to the child will help

the process a lot faster, the interaction of the biological and adoptive parents

will make the whole adoption process accessible to the both parties.

History of adoption are concluded in this study and the different kinds of

adoption that helped the researches become aware about the circumstances

that is going on behind the adoption process. Not only the government, but

also the society must be aware of the issues about adoption because the

percentage of orphan children are rising up as every year comes. With the

help of the present fields and practitioners they are able to upgrade the

construction of adoption. Social trends, Problems, Cultural Values, Historical

events, etc. are part of the shaping of the said situation. As time goes by, the

adoption centers are always ready and accessible to whoever want to adopt a

child (Baden, 2003).

There are some fields that the mentioned paper lacks such as social work.

Social work is a important part of the process, they are the one who monitor

the well being of the child and the situation of the adoptive families. They are

the source of the center to get information regarding the foster family, whether

they treat the child negatively or positively. Social workers will be present until

the child has grown up or if the child can handle themselves and is

responsible and mature enough to handle difficult or problematic situations

(Baden, 2003).
