Genes Vs.

Environment

As indicated by, “Nature versus Nurture: A Study of Adopted and

Biological Children and their Behavioral Patterns ” (2012) by Courtney Janaye

Grenke, this thesis tackles whether an adopted children behaviors came from

genetics or the environment and the importance on how to handle carefully an

adopted child when it comes to medical attention. The difference of biological

child to an adopted one is due to their unique struggles and challenges they

need to overcome from having a different family.

The author used nurses as the relation to the adopted child in the

research, in the hospital nurses interact with a population, they need to be

careful when handling children and adolescent. Nurses are the first person the

people talk to before the doctor, they are the one who handles patients and

mostly talk to them. They usually have different patients to handle and they

mostly inside the hospital to guide all the patients and to treat them when the

doctor is not available.

This thesis is to inform those newly graduated nurses on how to handle

these kind of situation where they have to treat the adopted child and talk to

his/her family efficiently. Nurses are instructed to use appropriate language

when talking to the adopted child and not talk about any topics that correlates

to adoption that can impact the child and let he/she be comfortable with the

nurse. The children biological or adopted must be treated that they are fully

accepted by their family and the society because they are sensitive and too

young to understand the topics about adoption etc.

A program called “W.I.S.E UP!” is also tackled, it is a tool for adopted

children to deal with uncomfortable questions from strangers that asks about
their race, ethnicity, culture,etc. that might affect their self-esteem. The

program empowers the adopted children since there are controversy as to

whether there are increasing risk for the adopted children’s behavioral and

adjustment problems compared to biological children, it is important for nurses

to understand this research (Stams, Juffer, Van IJzendoorn, & Hoksbergen,

2001). The tool also helps the families to face these challenging moment into

success, there are possibilities that the adopted child’s parents are not

excepted by these uncomfortable questions given by those people who are

clueless about their family.

The society are also acquainted by the thesis because there are people

who are oblivious with this subject. The problems of having a uncomfortable

conversation about adoption especially if the person is not allowed to talk

about the content or they have a bad experience about adoption. Adopted

children are not different with the biological children, they are both a child and

they must be treated and guided properly by the adults to overcome

challenges in the future.
