Mid-Semester Test
(EC-2 Regular)
Q.1. What are different level of automation in automation pyramid, where do the actual process
or manufacturing lie in the mentioned levels. How does the actual process linked to
different department of manufacturing plant? [5 + 1 +2 = 8]
Q.2. Using hydraulics logic only schematically draw a complete system for the following
setup. Two double acting cylinders, cylinder ‘A’ clamping cylinder and cylinder ‘B’
punching cylinder, are actuated using one 4/2 lever operated spring offset valve. On
pressing the lever first cyl. A moves after certain clamping force is developed the cyl. B
moves and performs the operation. After operation is preformed operator releases the
lever. Release of the lever causes both cylinder to retract simultaneously. [5]
Q.3. A pressure-relief valve contains a poppet with an area of 4.2 cm2 on which the system
pressure acts. During assembly, a spring with a spring constant of 3200 N/cm is installed
in the valve to hold the poppet against its seat. The adjustment mechanism is then set so
that the spring is initially compressed to 0.5 cm from its free-length condition. In order to
pass full pump flow through the valve at the pressure-relief valve pressure setting, the
poppet must move 0.30 cm from its fully closed position (a) Determine the cracking
pressure. (b) Determine the full pump flow pressure (pressure-relief valve pressure
setting). (c) What should be the initial compression of the spring in pressure-relief valve if
the full pump flow is to be 40% greater than the cracking pressure? [6]
Q.4. Using diagram (no tee joints should be used) and equation discuss what happens to the
load carrying capacity of a double acting cylinder if it is operated in regenerative mode.
[2 + 3 = 5]
Q.5 (a) In reference to diagram shown in figure name the following components: i- 1V1, ii-
1S1, iii- 1S2, iv- 1S3.
Q.5 (b) Draw step displacement diagram for the system shown. The system starts by pressing
push button. [2 + 4 = 6]
