Fluid Mechanics Problem Set Solutions

This document contains 10 problems related to fluid mechanics and hydrostatics. Problem 1 asks the reader to determine the height of the top of a cube with different specific gravities in its upper and lower halves resting in a two-layer fluid. Problem 2 asks at what angle a wooden beam will float in water. Problem 3 asks the reader to determine the tension in a rope anchoring a spherical helium balloon to the ground. The remaining problems involve calculations related to volume, density, weight, draft and determining if objects will float or sink.

Problem set in fluid

1. A cube 2.5ft on an edge has its lower half of sg=1.6 and upper half sg=0.7. It rest in a two-
layer fluid, with lower sg=1.4 and upper sg=0.8. Determine the height of the top of the cube
about interface.

2. A wooden beam of sp=0.64 is 180mm by 180mm and is hinged at A. At what angle will the
beam float in the water?

3. A spherical balloon, 9m diameter is filled with helium gas pressurized to 115kpa at a

temperature of 25°C and anchored by a rope to the ground. Neglecting the dead weight of the
balloon, determine the tension in the rope. Use R=212m/°K for helium gas and yair=
11.76Kn/m^3

4. Consider an arbitrary shaped body with a submerged volume and a density, submerged in a
fluid of density. What is the net vertical force on the body due to hydrostatic forces?

5. A stone weighs 105lb in air. When submerged in water, it weighs 67lb. Find the volume and
specific gravity of the stone

6. A piece of irregularly shaped metal weighs 300N in air. When the metal is completely
submerged in water, it weighs 232.5N. Find the volume of the metal.

7. A cube of timber 1.25ft on each side floats in water as shown in figure 6-1. The specific
gravity of the timber is 0.60. Find the submerged depth of the cube.

8. A barge is loaded with 160 tons of coal. The weight of the empty barge in air is 45tons. If the
barge is 20ft wide, 56ft long and 12ft height. What is the draft (i.e its depth below the water
surface?)

9. Determine the submerged depth of a cube of steel 0.80m on each side floating in mercury.
The specific gravities of steel and mercury are 9.8 and 13.6, respectively.

10. A hollow cube 1.0m on each side weighs 2.4Kn. The cube is tied to a solid concrete block
weighing 10Kn. Will these two objects tied together float or sink in water? Sp=2.40.
