Wind Pressure and Foundation Design Calculations

The document provides information for calculating wind loads and seismic loads on a structure according to various codes and standards. It then uses these loads to calculate design loads, moments, and shear forces on an ITS (Intelligent Transportation System). Finally, it summarizes soil properties and design considerations to size the isolated foundation for the ITS, checking that the maximum bearing pressure is less than the allowable soil pressure.

Wind pressure calculation

Design wind speed = 150 kmph = 93.16770186335 mph

As per UBC 97 Section 1620
Design wind pressure P = [Link]
Where,
P= Design wind pressure
Ce = Combined height, exposure and gust factor coefficient as given in Table 16-G. .
Pressure coefficient for the structure or portion of structure under consideration as given in
Cq = Table 16-H.

Iw = Importance factor as set forth in Table 16-K.

Wind stagnation pressure at the standard height of 33 feet (10 000 mm) as set forth in Table 16-F.
qs =

Hence,
Horizontal Pressure Vertical Pressure
Ce = 1.06 1.06
Cq = 1.30 0.70
Iw = 1.00 1.00

Calculating Base Shear (V)

As per section 1630.2 Static Force Procedure, total design base
shear (V) in a given direction shall be calculated using following
formula.
V = (CvI/RT) X W
= (0.32x1/4.5x1)x65
= 7.72 kN

The total design base shear calculated from above equation

should be lesser than the following:

V = (2.5CaI/R) X W
= (2.5x0.22x1/4.5)x65
= 7.94 kN

But, it shall be greater than the following:

V = 0.11CaI W
= 0.11x0.22x1x65
= 1.573 kN

Soil pressure below column = 10.46/(0.6x0.6)
= 29.06 kN/m2
Soil Resistence with effective width = 2.79 kN
Net punching shear force Vu = 26.26 kN
Factored Shear force = 39.40 kN
Hence shear stress τp = Vu / ( b0 x d)
= 0.21 kN/m2
Allowable shear stress tc all' able = kstc (Refer Cl.31.6.3 & Cl. 34.2.4 -of IS 456:2000)
ks ( 0.5 + bc) = 0.5 +0.75 / 1.5 0.833333333 < 1
Hence, ks = 0.83
tc allowable = ks x (0.25 x (fck)0.5 = 1.04
tp < tc allow.
Ok
DESIGN OF PEDESTAL / COLUMN (Slender Column)

Design of Pedestal :
a) Check for slenderness
Greater lateral dimension D = 0.40 m
Least lateral dimension b = 0.30 m
Unsupported length of Column Lo = (1+0.15)-(0.15/2 1.08 m
Effective length of column Lex = 2 x Lo 2.15 m
Slenderness of column Lex / D = 5.375
6.0 < 12 Design as Short Column
Therefore the Column is slender about the axes, & it is designed as a slender column.
b) load calculation
Vertical load V = 18.37 kN
Self weight of Pedestal Wp = 1x0.4x0.3x25 3 kN
Total vertical load Pu = V + Wp
= 21.37 kN
Factored total vertical load = 32.055 kN
Total moment at column base, Mu = M + F x (D + h - t)
= 3.62641156462585 kNm
Factored moment at column base = 5.43961734693878 kNm
Eccentricity e = Mu / Pu
= 169.696376444822 mm
c) Check for minimum eccentricity (Refer Cl. 25.4 of IS 456:2000)
Min. eccentricity emin = Leff / 500 + D / 30
= 17.6333333333333 < 20
Moment due to min. eccentricity Mu min = Pu x max (emin , e)
= 5439.61734693877 kNm > Mu Ok
Additional moment due to slenderness Max = ((Pu x D) / 2000) x ( lex / D)2
= 0.186 kNm
Multiplication factor to reduce the moment K = 1 (As per SP:16, Clause 3.4)
Additional moment due to slenderness Max = 0.186x K
= 0.186
Total design moment Mu = 3.81241156462585 kN.m
Factored design moment = 5.71861734693877 kN.m
d) Design of long. Reinforcement
b = 300 mm
D = 400 mm
cover = 40 mm
d' = 48 mm
d'/D = 0.12
Pu / fckbD = 0.010685
Mu / fckbD2 = 0.004765514455782
pt / fck = 0.01 ( Ref. Chart 48 of Sp 16 for 0.1)
% of reinforcement, pt = (0.01*25)/100
= 0.03
Reinforcement required Ast 0.03x300x 400)/100
= 36 mm2
Reinforcement required required shall be provided as per - Cl. [Link] of IS 456:2000 (a, b & h)
Concrete area reqd. to resist direct vertical load = Pu / 0.36 fck
= 3561.67 mm2
Reinforcement required for column Ast = 0.80% of 3561.67
28.493 mm2
Provide main bar dia of Pedestal / Column = 4 Nos. of 12 dia
= 4 Nos. of 12 dia
Reinforcement provided = 904.77868423386 mm2 safe
% of reinforcement provided = 0.75398223686155 %
e) Design for lateral ties 0.75398223686155
Maximum shear force Vu = 1.93 kN
Factored shear force = 2.8875 kN
Nominal Shear stress τν = Vu / bd
= 0.0240625 N/mm2
% of steel provided on one side of column / pedestal pt = 452.38934211693 mm2
= 0.376991118430775 %
τc = 0.422 N/mm2 (Refer table 19 of IS 456:2000)
= tv < tc
Hence, ok
Considering two (2) legged ties of 8 mm dia. Bars

Spacing of lateral ties shall be least of the following

i) Least lateral dimension of pedestal = 300 mm
ii) 16 x dia of longitudinal reinf. = 192 mm
iii) 48 x dia of transverse reinf. = 384 mm
Hence provide 4 legged 8 mm dia bar @ 180 mm c/c
