EDO EDP: 2.05 Conventional Colors for Equipment And Piping Rev. A E-2/6
1 PURPOSE
The purpose of this procedure is to define:
a) The conventional color for equipment, piping, ventilation ducts etc;
b) The marking of colors which identify the fluids in piping and ducts.
2 CONVENTIONAL COLORS FOR EQUIPMENT, PIPING AND DUCTS
2.1 GENERAL RULE
When an item of equipment, piping, ventilation duct etc. is painted and the painted surface
remains visible once installation is complete (painted non-insulated equipment and piping in
particular), the top coat of the painted surface should be of the conventional color given in:
a) Appendix A for items of equipment;
b) Appendix B for piping, ventilation ducts and their supports.
The paints listed in Appendices A and B are gloss finished. When an item of equipment
contains several fluids simultaneously, the color of the top coat is the conventional color of
the fluid corresponding to the function of the item of equipment. Example:
a) The case of a condenser which contains:
i) steam to be condensed
ii) cold water for cooling
EDO EDP: 2.05 Conventional Colors for Equipment And Piping Rev. A E-3/6
The final color is that for steam.
c) The case of a heat exchanger containing:
i) water to be heated
ii) the steam for heating
The final color is that for water.
2.2 EXCEPTIONS OF THE RULE
The general rule does not apply to items of equipment in the control rooms. Exceptions to the
general rule can also be granted to a limited number of items, mainly very large items (e.g.,
turbine generator casing). The choice of colors other than the conventional colors shall be
submitted to the NPP Project Management for approval.
3 IDENTIFICATION OF THE FLUID IN THE PIPING AND DUCTS
It must be possible for plant operators to distinguish the main characteristics of the fluids
conveyed in the pipes and ducts. This is achieved by external markings on the pipes and ducts
made up of painted lings or adhesive bands side by side. Note; It is not applied for ventilation
ducts. Such marking shall be applied on each pipe at-least once in each area and every 10m
along the pipes, on equipment connections or non-welded junctions, at both sides of valves,
walls, floors and penetrations and any other places where the identification of the fluid
conveyed is necessary. This marking is divided into 5 zones:
a) Zone-1 identifying the type of fluid conveyed in the piping (water, steam, air etc.): the
color of this zone is called the background color.
b) Zone-2 identifying, for a given fluid, the nature of that fluid (for water: if it is de-
mineralized, potable, raw etc.). The color of this zone is called the fluid identification
color.
c) Zone-3 identifying the state of the fluid (hot, cold, liquefied gas, etc.); the color of this
zone is called fluid state color.
d) Zone-4 used for indicting that the fluid conveyed is radioactive. This is represented by a
standard radio protection warning sign.
e) Zone-5 used for indicating the direction of flow. This is represented by a black arrow, if
the color of the final coat of paint of the pipe is black, the arrow must be white. The
arrow dimensions shall match the diameter of the pipe.
The sketch in the section illustrates all these provisions and indicates the form, dimensions
and location of the different zones in relation to each other.
The table below gives the width on the zones according to the diameter of the piping:
The width of Pipe outer diameter including ≤75mm ≥75mm
identification color band possible protection
The zones of identification color
Width of the background color band (if not the same as the color 60mm 150mm
of the final paint coat of the whole pipe or for the insulated
pipes).
Width of the fluid identification color bands 30mm 50mm
Width of the fluid state color band (if it exists - otherwise 30mm 50mm
the fluid identification color is used)
The table at Appendix C gives the conventional background and identification colors, while
the table in appendix D gives the conventional color for the fluid state. The paints listed in
Appendices C and D are gloss finished.
