Johann adam is recorded as spending nine florins on “the purchase of flutes”: a
sum that would have paid for a pair of them.54 His teacher was the imperial
chamber composer Frantz daniel thallmann,55 who served both leopold I and
Joseph I before being awarded a pension in 1712. the prince must have been
pleased with thallmann’s tuition, because later that year a gratuity was paid to
the composer.56 these sources, however, are the only ones to mention the musical
activities of the prince,57 but they help to explain his fondness for the flute and
its prominent place in the compositions written at his court.
early in 1708 Joseph Johann adam left on a Grand tour. In contrast to the
tranquil and uneventful tour of his father, the prince ended up fighting bravely
on two separate fronts in the War of the spanish succession. on leaving austria,
he travelled to Italy, where he is recorded as visiting Milan, turin, rome, naples
and other cities of the peninsula, and Barcelona, where he was greeted warmly
by his father. the prince later joined the regiment of count Guido starhemberg, 58
but he also managed to visit some of the most important sites of the country, such
as the Montserrat monastery in Catalonia. In 1709 he left spain and travelled via
Genoa and Geneva to Germany. In the netherlands Joseph Johann adam joined
an army led by John Churchill, 1st duke of Marlborough, with whom he fought
in the sieges of dornick and Mons and the famous battle of Malplaquet in
Belgium. after the victory of Churchill and his forces the prince travelled to
england with the duke. Joseph Johann adam’s exact movements in 1710 and 1711
are not fully documented, but we know that he rejoined his father in december
