Codes of Ethics for Civil Engineer Summary

It is mandated in the code of ethics for civil engineers that one should be;
responsible enough and should be able to provide safety and welfare to his/her clients,
providing the most effective and efficient service. It is his responsibility to draw up
procedures to endure a good and safe environment not only for his clients but also to his
employees. He is strictly prohibited to accept projects that would endanger public health.
Given that his works and projects should only be committed on improving the
environment to enhance the quality of life. He should not approve or accept projects out
from his field of expertise, and which he lacks competence by virtue of his education or
experience.
An engineer should always be honest and truthful towards his clients,
company/firm and to his profession. One should have modesty and dignity in doing his
job, and should avoid any act to promote his own interests that would dishonor the
profession. It is important to consider that he should act professionally when dealing with
his work, every information provided from his client or from the project should be treated
confidentially. He must not take the works of other engineers for his own merit and must
take credit. In negotiating contracts, he should compete fairly and just, following legal
processes. He is not allowed to enter any competitions for designs for the purpose of
obtaining commissions for specific projects, unless provision is made and also shall not
agree to perform any engineering service on a free basis, except for professional
services, which are advisory in nature for civic, charitable, religious or non-profit
organizations.
It is the engineers' job to uphold and acclaim the honor of his profession, and should
continue to develop his skills throughout his career to impart opportunities and
development to other engineers under his supervision.
