“Organic Gardening”
Introduction
Organic Gardening is a type of gardening wherein it does not use any artificial fertilizer
or harmful chemical in order to protect and grow a certain plant. But instead, it uses natural
compost and manure to fertilize and grow plants. Organic gardening is one of the many ways we
can give our share to our environment in terms of protecting it as well as preserve it for the
future generation. Not only it is safe for the consumers, but it also does not harm the soil and the
environment as a whole. Some may complain that it is time consuming, and that it takes much
more effort to know about different creatures and also to make your own compost but the
advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
Context
Our Barangay, Barangay Batinguel was once an agricultural land. It houses different
species of plants and vegetables. It also had wide hectares of rice and corn fields. But due to
technological evolution and advancement our local farmers lost their interest in agriculture since
the support coming from the Local Government Unit is low. By this time agriculture, requires a
lot of investment from chemicals, seedlings, water system and man power. So how do we solve
it? First is to maximize what we can get in from the environment, Water, from the land location
of Barangay Batinguel which is a passageway of different river branch, it is not hard to create a
water system out from it. We can reuse the irrigation systems that are abandoned. Next is the
seedling, we can culture as many seedlings as we want from certain plant. So what is it that is
important in order to fertilize and protect our plants from different insects and pests? This are
fertilizers, but we all know that with the current inventions and advancement of chemistry in
formulating fertilizer, some farmers settle on this expensive, “high grade”, environmental
destructive fertilizers and pesticides.
We can lessen the investment for this artificial fertilizers and pesticides by turning
Organic. And this is where we use our project, The Organic Gardening. This are the few of many
advantages of Organic Gardening, No chemicals are used. So all grown fruits and vegetables are
safe. Using natural compost keeps the soil in good condition, improvement in soil structure
encourages beneficial creatures like worms which again lead to more fertility, doesn't require
much to make it, you can make your own compost from garden and kitchen waste. With this type
of fertilizing and protecting the plants, our farmers will now have lesser investment for
chemicals and in the other hand, helping our nature and our soil to be more fertile and causes less
destruction. In order to make an organic garden, first is to take a wooden box of about 1.5 to 2
feet deep, 3-4 feet long and 2-3 feet wide. Clean it and make 5-6 small holes at the bottom for the
water to drain out. Take some fresh garden soil but make sure it does not have any artificial
manure or pesticides mixed in it. You can mix some cow dung or natural compost in the soil.
Mix the soil thoroughly. Cover the holes in the box with small wire meshes or very small pebbles
so that the sand or soil does not get in and block the drainage holes. Put the mixed soil in the
box. Select some plant seedlings or seeds and plant them in the soil. Keep some distance
between each seed, as the plants will need space to grow. And wait for the plants to grow til it’s
ready to be transplanted, Use the same mixture of soil in the area where the grown seeds will be
transplanted.
