When the news broke of your passing, our hearts they were torn.

We held one another to get through the day,

We talked of your smile and the things you would say.

We commented on suit jackets and how you were always well dressed,
We remembered the laughs and the jokes, oh how we were blessed.

Our hearts they are breaking and the tears they do fall,
When we think of the gentleman, the scholar, the friend to us all.

Dear Mr Corry
We as a year group would like to thank you for all your endless efforts of keeping
us on track in classes, the halls, break and lunch.

Some of us have had you since first year and some since fifth year, however you
have always made the same efforts and given each and every one of us so much
support and guidance.

Thank you for pushing us to the best of our ability and showing us that school is
about more than just sitting in a class learning but showing us it’s about mak-
ing friends and having fun. On days where we felt like giving up on school you
showed that we could do it, and always motivated us to reach our full potential.

We would like to thank you for the time you spent helping us plan the yearbook
so we all have something to look back on.

There’s no doubt that we will miss you, whether it is you giving out to us about
jackets, being late to class or you telling us we will and can get there.

Finally, we would like to say thank you for being a major part of our school years
whether it was two or five you have been amazing

Message from the Principal
To the Leaving Cert Class of 2020,

I wrote my original address for your Year book in January. So much has changed since then
that I felt it needed to be re-written to reflect how your final year has evolved.

As you come to the end of your second level education, none of us could have foreseen how
this year would go. Dreams and plans for ‘the last English class’, ‘the last assembly’, the 6th
Yr bar-b-q, the graduation ceremony and the Debs were in full swing in January, but that
all came to an abrupt halt on March 12th when we were instructed to close the school. As
I watched you all leave, hastily grabbing books from lockers, getting a quickie-guide to MS
Teams, and giving each other hugs, I did not think that you would be leaving the building
for the last time. I’m sure you didn’t either.

You have been through an emotional roller-coaster since then, having to stay at home,
learning and adapting to the online world of distance education, hearing many different
rumours about the Leaving Certificate, culminating in the eventual decision to postpone it
until much later in the year and replace it with a system of calculated grades. I know there
are mixed feelings about this, some of you are happy, some are very disappointed but most
just relieved that a decision has finally been made.

What you may not realise is that the experience you have been through has given you a
skill set that sets you apart from previous Leaving Cert classes. You have become self-moti-
vated, self-directed young men & women which will give you a great head start in what-
ever you do next. Because you have persevered through the uncertainty, you have become
very resilient. You have learnt to organise yourself and meet deadlines. For those heading
to college, you will most likely face a blended learning scenario, some college-based, some
distance learning, and now you have that nailed! Every one of you can look back at the last
few months and say, ‘I got through that!’.

We must also remember life before March 12th 2020. Look at all you have achieved during
your time in school. You have had many good times together, in Salesians, St. Nessans and
with us in Thomond Community School. I know that your previous principals, Sr. Bridget
O’Connell and Mr Eugene O’Brien join with me in wishing you the very best for your future.
Education is the passport to your future and the education you have received will help you
to navigate the road ahead. Believe in yourself. Whilst change challenges us, it is necessary
and inevitable, natural and normal. It helps us to grow, opening up new opportunities, new
possibilities and new experiences. Without change, the dark of winter would never turn
into the beauty of spring and there would be no butterflies to admire!

Class of 2020, beyond the doors of Thomond Community College, a world of new changes,
challenges and opportunities await you. You are ready for it, you made it, you’ve got this!

Message from the Deputy Principal
Wow! Who would have thought we would end the year like this! We have had to shred
the speeches, shred the graduation plans, shred the lesson plans and shred the study
plans- everything has changed this year. One thing that will not be shredded though, is our
memories of The Class of 2020.

This is a year group that all teachers and staff members will remember so very fondly. This
was a year group full of big personalities, big hearts, big work ethic and most importantly
big smiles. On a personal note this was the first yeargroup that I really got to know well.
Most of this yeargroup was in second year when I started in Thomond Community College.
Second year is nicknamed ‘The Terrible Two’s’ by teachers all over the country! And your
yeargroup didn’t disappoint! Tears and tantrums galore, but another feature of the terrible
twos is the emergence of a tenacious and passionate personality; and those traits you all
display in abundance.

I feel very privileged to have been part of your journey into adulthood. It may have been
a bit bumpy at times but adolescence is not meant to be easy or smooth. It is a period in
our lives that is put there to help us build the foundations for our adult selves. All of the
Class of 2020, and all the students who have graduated before, have overcome challenges
and have forged forward into the light of adulthood with strength & courage. Years 12-18
is very transformative time for a human. Looking back at your first year photos some of
you are unrecognisable. For some the transformation has been on an emotional and social
plane, for others it has been more fundamental.

There is no greater joy as an educator than to see young adults transform & blossom. I
have shed tears for you and with you, I have been frustrated with you and for you, and I
have been inspired by your actions and the strength you have shown. On many occasions
students in this yeargroup have stood up for what they believe, talked out against injus-
tices and defended others. I admire you for that and I hope the confidence, conviction,
diverse vocabulary, and strength that we endeavoured to teach you in Thomond Communi-
ty College has assisted you on this journey.

I have many precious memories from this yeargroup; some will never be put to ink, some
will be aired at the graduation (!?). I have grown very attached to you as a group of young
adults and I struggle with the idea of not seeing you in person again for some time. For
now I will cherish the feelings of warmth, friendliness and the resonating sound of laugh-
ter that filled the 6th year lunch area and I look forward to when we can gather again as a
group and share laughter and memories again.

Message from your Yearhead

To the graduating class of 2020.

It is always a bittersweet moment when the 6th years graduate from Thomond Commu-
nity College. I have been privileged to get to know you all over the last 6 years and I am
genuinely upset to see you leave. But I must say I am also excited and even a little jealous
watching you take your first steps into adulthood.

It would be remiss of me to not mention some people who have been instrumental in
getting you to this point in your lives. Firstly, I would like to thank your teachers and your
parents for all they have done for you over the years. A particular word of thanks should
go to your former principals, Sr. Bridget O’Connell and Mr. Eugene O’Brien. A special thank
you to Mr. McAuley who took care of some of you for Junior Cycle. Your class tutors were
vital and always guided you in the right direction and had your best interests at heart. A
big thank you to Ms. Aherne, Ms. Corr and Ms O’Brien and not forgetting Ms Ayers and
Ms Magee as well. Ms Brennan and Ms O’Brien were also instrumental in your journey as
coordinators of LCA and TY respectively. Of course at this time I also remember Mr. Treacy
who very sadly passed away last year. Finally, I would like to thank our current principal
and deputy principal, Ms. O’Brien and Ms. Hogan for all their hard work, dedication and
support.

I would not have been able to do my job without your support over the years. Thank you
all from the bottom of my heart for being such wonderful students. I would like to think
that I got most calls correct over the years. On the very odd occasion that I got something
wrong I was always willing to receive a deputation from students to put me right and show
me the error of my ways!!! It has been a particular pleasure to watch you all grow into the
proud, confident and assertive adults that you all have become.

I would like to conclude by wishing you all the very best for the future with whatever path
you choose to embark on. I know as time fades your memories of this place you will even-
tually struggle to remember individual classes or teachers. I am certain though that you
will carry the values and spirit of this school in your hearts for the rest of your lives. You
will never forget the fun, the joy and the friendship that you forged here.

Message from LCA Coordinator

In September 2018 as LCA Coordinator I welcomed 18 new LCA students for me to guide
and care for over the next two years.

They soon learnt that there is always a deadline to reach, interviews to prepare for and
exams to take and Ms. Brennan and all your teachers looking for one thing or another.
There is no let-up in the work rate in LCA. It is constant.

Your fifth Year proved to be a challenging year for all. Some students left us for employ-
ment and took up other courses. Sixth year however proved to be a year whereby the
students graduating matured, settled into their course, and were focused on achieving
their best potential.

This ended abruptly on March 12th with the Covid-19 announcement.

You continued to work online, and it was genuinely nice to catch up on our weekly Teams
meetings. While I know that you are disappointed that your graduation is not as planned,
the lovely banners you created for it will still be hung up to honour and celebrate you on
this special occasion.

Remember no matter what result August brings there is something out there for you to do
and to know you are important to many people. Be kind and caring adults and enjoy your
life. My sincerest best wishes to you all for your future.

I would like to thank all your class teachers, Year Head, Mr. Corry, Principal Ms. O’Brien,
Deputy Principal Ms. Hogan and Eileen and Maria in the office for the organisation and
daily encouragement they have imparted, to bring these eight students to their graduation
day.

This is not how you imagined it. Your last term, weeks, days and classes. Who would have
thought that on March 12th when you awoke and dressed in uniform that it was to be your
last?

Mar a deir an seanfhocail “Is ait an mac an saol” – life is strange. As our Taoiseach, Leo
Varadkar said , these are ‘Unprecedented times’. Words such as ‘social distancing social
solidarity, quarantine have become our new chit-chat , but let us not forget the great
journey each of you have had since you first stepped foot in Thomond Community College.

Class of 2020-You are now part of history. You will never be forgotten.
The school of life is just beginning.

As my first class tutor group to see through to graduation it has been an honour and a
privilege to watch you all grow into such wonderful young adults.

Unfortunately while you are not completing your time in Thomond Community College
in a traditional way please remember that completing secondary school is so much more
than a certificate or exam results, it shows the confidence, determination and character
within you, which you have all shown in abundance particularly in recent months.

Each and every one of you have so much to offer, continue to be kind, caring and thought-

It was the end of sports day.

I will always remember the day Luke,

Katie, Manika and I were really bored
during lunch so we decided to have
a wheel barrow race. It was Luke and I Vs
Manika and Katie. The girls gave up
and both fell and we went as far as
Ms. English’s room until Luke went
straight into a bin and none of us
could top laughing.

When we were coming back from our trip to Salou,

we were on the plane about to come into
the country and I decided to get up and go to t
he bathroom. Just as I was about to shut the

Everything was shaking and rocking side to side.
I was in the bathroom hitting my head off the wall,
the mirror and the door. I decided to leave but as I
left, we hit turbulences again and I fell out the door.

The flight attendees were strapped to their chairs

laughing at me. I was so embarrassed, I tried to run
back to my seat without falling over and I didn’t get
back up again until we touched the ground. Glad to
say I came off that plane with a concussion.
