Crystalline Imperfections in Metals

This document outlines topics to be covered in Tutorial 4 of the course KXEX1110 Fundamentals of Materials Science. The tutorial will cover crystalline imperfections, including the solidification process of pure metals, metal alloys and solid solutions, grain boundaries, and ASTM grain size numbers. Calculations of interstitial void sizes and determining grain size numbers from micrographs will also be covered.

KXEX1110: Fundamentals of Materials Science

Lecturer: Dr. Wong Yew Hoong

Tutorial 4: Crystalline Imperfections

1. Describe and illustrate the solidification process of a pure metal in terms of the nucleation

and growth of crystals.

2. What is metal alloy? What is a solid solution?

3. Distinguish between a substitutional solid solution and an interstitial solid solution.

4. What are the conditions that are favourable for extensive solid solubility of one element in

another?

5. Calculate the radius of the largest interstitial void in the BCC  iron lattice. The atomic

radius of the iron atom in this lattice is 0.124 nm and the largest interstitial voids occur at

the (1/4, 1/2, 0); (1/2, 3/4, 0); (3/4, 1/2, 0) and (1/2, 1/4, 0), etc., type positions.

6. Descibe the structure of a grain boundary. Why are grain boundaries favourable sites for

the nucleation and growth of precipitates?

7. Why grain boundaries are easily observed in the optical microscope?

8. If there are 400 grains per square inch on a photomicrograph of a ceramic material at

200X, what is the ASTM grain-size number of the material?

9. Determine the ASTM grain-size number of the type 430 stainless steel micrograph shown

in figure. This micrograph is at 200X.
