Settings for Cooling Water Inlet Temperature at Scavenge Air Cooler
ENGINE TYPE: ALL
1. Recommended settings
Based on the latest service experience, it was reported that it was effective to keep the
scavenging temperature as low as possible, in order to improve the cylinder condition.
With a lower cooling water temperature, the air cooler and the water mist catcher will
remove most of water from the compressed scavenge air when operating in warm humid
areas, because a capacity of water capture has improved in the current water mist
catcher, which has adopted to our engines recently. As a result, the humidity level in the
combustion gasses is lowered and , thereby, the serious tendency for condensation of
acids on the liner wall and the piston rings will decrease.
It is anticipated that, due to a reduction of scavenging temperature, the com bustion
condition becomes good in order to increase the air density in scavenging space and, in
addition, there is a reduction effect of fuel oil consumption more, i.e. an approx. 0.7 -1.0
g/kWh lower fuel oil consumption per 10°C lower cooling water temper ature, as shown in
Fig 1.
For the reason above, we recommend adjusting a 10°C set-point on the 3-way
temperature control valve for both the central cooling water system and the seawater
cooling system. This ensures that the cooling water is always as cold as possible. In
case that the cooling system is not applied the 10°C set-point, we recommend to reduce
to a minimum setting temperature as much as possible.
2. Cooling water system
A certain cooling system and components may not be able to handle such low
temperatures due to the relation of seawater temperature, etc. as recommended, though
“Set-point 10°C” is to be a purpose to make cooling temperature itself 10°C. In such a
case, we recommend that you identify those components and make them capable of
handling the above described recommendation, or alternatively cool them by another
system. Regarding those components, we recommend to ask about these to the
shipyard, according to your necessary.
3. Point to notice
We do not recommend adjusting the temperature below 10°C, because the water from
the same system is also used as cooling water to the lubricating oil cooler, which could
experience problems at lower temperatures.
For central cooling systems where the seawater flow capacity is being controlled to keep
a constant temperature in the freshwater cooling system, we also recommend that the
seawater flow is controlled in such a way that the freshwater temperature is kept 4°C
above the seawater temperature and the cooling water temperat ure is set above 10°C.
REMARKS:
B15103-2/2
On the other hand, some capture performance of the condensation water for the air
cooler casing and the water mist catcher, which are equipped in engines produced in
before year 2011, is somewhat less than them of the current design. In a such case,
we recommend to monitor carefully the condition of the condensation water discharge
at daily maintenance inspection, if the scavenging air temperature will be intended to
keep the scavenging temperature low. When much water-drain collects in
scavenging space in particular, it is doubt that the condensation water intrudes in a
cylinder.
In this case, we recommend to adjust the scavenging temperature high so that the
amount of condensation water in the scavenging space decreases as much as
possible. It is important to note that the scavenging temperature should be adjusted
in a normal operation range. However, in case that the temperature will be
increased over this normal operation range in order to reduce the amount of the
condensed water, please adjust it while being careful about rises of an exhaust gas
temperature carefully. Regarding how to adjust the scavenging temperature, please
refer to our Service Data sheet HSD-B11103.
