January – The Month of Opportunity!
Most of us would agree that January is a month where we try to make a change or two for the better.
It is a time to take advantage of opportunities. Here at Etna Elementary School, there are many
possibilities for your child to try out.
Are your children travelers at heart, do they know their way around a globe? Maybe they will
qualify for the school Geography Bee sponsored by National Geographic this month.
Is your son or daughter interested in how things work? The Science Fair is coming on February 4th.
How is your children’s spelling? The District Spelling Bee will happen in February, but the school
qualifiers will happen during this first month of the New Year.
Are they creative? Celebrating the Arts is also in the works for January.
You see, lots and lots of opportunity. Hopefully your family will be able to take advantage of at
least one of them! Happy New Year!

What do the Tribes Four Agreements mean, anyway? For the next few newsletters I’ll
be describing the Four Agreements and how we use them at Etna. Mutual Respect and
Attentive Listening form the foundation of the Four Agreements. How have you or your child demonstrated
these two lately?
• Mutual Respect includes respect for all other people, respect for other people’s property and privacy,
and respecting other people’s skills and contributions to the group. When we’re in our Tribes, Mutual Respect
means that we treat one another fairly, are patient, listen, and let everyone participate.
• Attentive Listening means that we give our full attention to the person speaking. We look at the person,
wait to make a comment rather than interrupting, and use positive body language. Using attentive listening is a
goal to strive for and practice every day.

Elementary, My Dear Etna!
Please enjoy the following talents of our wonderful students.
How to Make a Caramel Apple by Tyra Granacha
Have you ever wanted to make a delicious mouth watering snack when you get home from school or when a
friend comes over and you’re bored out of your mind? Well I’ve got something that you and a friend can do, or
you can do any time. All you have to do is get all the things I listed below. Do everything the directions say and
you will have a nice sweet caramel apple.
The first thing I’m going to tell you is the materials you will need to make your delicious caramel apples. The
first most important material you will need is somewhere to melt the caramel. Then you will need some popsicle
sticks or any other type of stick, depending on how many apples you are going to make. Then of course you will
need any kind of apple. I would suggest Granny Smith, but that’s up to you. Next, you will need a microwave
safe bowl, along with a cookie sheet that the apples can be put on. Some other things you will need; Caramel,
you can either use a tub of Caramel, wraps, or the square candies you can find at your nearest gas station. In my
opinion I would use the square candies. You will also need some wax paper so the apples won’t stick, butter or
vegetable oil, and one can of evaporated milk or condensed milk.
Now I will tell you some optional supplies. You don’t have to use any of the optional supplies, but if you
wanted to you could use nuts, crushed cookies, gummy worms, M and M’s, sprinkles, or even popcorn. You can
put on as many toppings as you like.
This is when it gets fun. I’m now going to teach you how to make Caramel Apples. First you have to buy the
supplies that I listed above. Next, you have to wash the supplies (if dirty) then wash your hands. When prepping
the apples you need to lay the wax paper down and spread butter on the wax paper, then peel the little sticker
off, if there is one. After your done peeling the sticker off you can put the stick through the bottom of the apple,
but don’t put the stick all the way through. Next, you will need to put the caramel in the microwave safe bowl
and put it in the microwave for two or three minutes, or until the caramel is melted. After you’ve melted the
caramel, open the can of condensed milk and pour it in. Now stir it into the caramel. Now this is my favorite
part. You finally get to dip your apple in the caramel. Wait, did you burn yourself? The caramel is very hot.
I would suggest that after you’ve dipped your apple you could take a spoon and pour more caramel on the
apple to cover up any bare spots on the apple. When all of that is done, you can decorate them with your
optional supplies. Let them cool for at least five to six minutes.
Now, the best part of all, take a big bite. Now, the worst part; it’s time to clean up, but if you’re like me I
would clean up right away because you wouldn’t want to be cleaning dishes until 3:00 in the morning. Now that
you’re done cleaning up, wasn’t it good? Mine was outstanding.

People asleep are dreaming. Time to go back to bed.
Happy things they dream as they wait Merry Christmas! they hear as Santa flies through the air.
