Discovery of Neutron by Chadwick

The document summarizes the discovery of the neutron by English physicist James Chadwick in 1932. It discusses how Chadwick smashed alpha particles into beryllium, allowing the radiation released to hit paraffin wax, showing collisions produced massive neutral particles that Chadwick named neutrons. It also mentions Chadwick received the 1935 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of the neutron and contributed to the Manhattan Project during World War II.

Discovery of neutron
Sir James Chadwick
(20 October 1891 – 24 July 1974) was
an English physicist who was
awarded the 1935 Nobel Prize in
Physics for his discovery of the
neutron in 1932. In 1941, he wrote
the final draft of the MAUD Report,
which inspired the U.S. government
to begin serious atomic bomb
research efforts. He was the head of
the British team that worked on the
Manhattan Project during the
Second World War. He was knighted
in England in 1945 for his
achievements in physics.

Introduction
Neutron was discovered by
Neutrons sir James Chadwick in the
year of 1932.
Neutron was present in
nucleus.
Neutron was same mass
and size of proton.
But it is neutrally charged.
History
1930 Bothe & Becker
performed an expt.
Neutron is neutral and
causes no ionization
and cannot be detected
in a cloud chamber
DISCOVERY OF NEUTRONS
Chadwick smashed alpha
particles into beryllium, a rare
metallic element, and allowed
the radiation that was released to
hit another target: paraffin wax.
The experiment results showed a
collision with beryllium atoms
Neutrons
would release massive neutral
particles, which Chadwick
named neutrons.
Nuclear Properties

Atomic masses are denoted by the symbol u.

1 u = 1.66054 × 10−27 kg = 931.49 MeV/c2
Both neutrons and protons, collectively called
nucleons, are constructed of other
particles called quarks.
After discovery the Neutron
Sir James Chadwick
got

Noble Prize
