Soil Mechanics Compaction and Settlement Analysis

This document contains details of four soil mechanics assignments: 1) Performing a compaction test on soil and plotting the results, including the maximum dry unit weight, optimum moisture content, saturation lines, and allowable moisture range for 95% relative compaction. 2) Calculating the probable ultimate settlement of a 6m thick clay layer under a 100 kN/m2 surface load, given soil properties and a groundwater table. 3) Plotting total and effective stress profiles for a layered soil profile with sand and clay, and determining the effect of saturated sand above the water table. 4) Performing consolidation test calculations on a clay sample to determine compression index, coefficient of volume compressibility

ASSIGNMENT 2

Soil Mechanics
Birbhum Institute of Engineering & Technology
1. a)The following data refers to a compaction test as per Indian Standard
(light compaction) :

Water content
8·5 12·2 13·75 15·5 18·2 20·2
(%)
Wt. of wet
1·80 1·94 2·00 2·05 2·03 1·98
sample (kg)

If the specific gravity of soil grains was 2·7,

i)Plot the compaction curve and obtain the maximum dry unit weight and the
optimum moisture content.
ii)Plot the 80% and 100% saturation lines and 20% air void line.

iii) If it is proposed to secure a relative compaction of 95% in the field, what is the range
of water content that can be allowed ?

Use graph paper

2. The soil profile at a building site consists of sand up to 4 m depth, normally loaded
soft clay from 4 m to 10 m depth, and stiff impervious rock below 10 m depth. The
ground-water table is at 4 m depth below ground level. The sand has a density of 15.17
kN/m3. For the clay, void ratio=0.9, liquid limit is 60% and saturated unit
weight=19.376 KN/[Link] the probable ultimate settlement due to consolidation
of the 6m thick clay layer resulting from a uniformly distributed surface load of 100
kN/m2 applied over an extensive area of the site.

3. A layer of saturated clay 4m thick is overlain by sand 5m deep, the water table being 3m
below the surface. The saturated unit weights of the clay and sand are 19 kN/m3 and 20
kN/m3 respectively: above the water table the unit weight of the sand is 17 kN/m3.
i)Plot the vertical total stress and effective vertical stress against depth.
ii)If sand to a height of 1m above the water table is saturated with capillary water, how are
the above stresses affected?

4.A laboratory consolidation test was performed on a 2 cm thick clay sample of a silt clay and
the following results wre obtained:
Pressure(kg/cm2) 0 0.25 .50 1.00 2.00 4.00 8.00 0.00
dial guage (mm) 5.590 5.234 4.960 4.604 3.964 3.515 2.785 5.224
The final moisture content of the sample after swelling was found to be 32.5%.G=2.70
i)Plot e vs log p ii) Determine compression index and mv of soil.
