Overview/ Rondalla and Instrumentation is an ensemble of stringed instruments played with the
Introduction: plectrum or pick, which is also known as plectrum instruments. This ensemble
originated in medieval Spain which later taken to Spanish America and the
Philippines in the early times. These stringed Instruments helped preserve traditional
lullabies, love songs “harana” (serenade) and other folksongs, melodies, fiestas and
weddings.
It contributed a big impact to some part of the Philippines especially in preserving the
culture and tradition of the country. Certain styles that were adopted by the natives
were used in performing various cultural music or folk songs in the Philippines. The
performance of this instruments are usually done in campuses as part of the
curriculum not only for proficiency and musical sensitivity but for the aim of
educating students to patronize and promoting local and traditional music. It is also
used in some performances abroad, showcasing its beauty and at the same
introducing Filipino Music, modern or old folk songs.
Learning 1. Discuss and identify the different types and skills in playing Rondalla.

Discussion/ The common Rondalla consists of four banduria (14 String lute with a flat back), laud

strings.
- It is usually made of hard plastic but turtle shell is the best material for it
is durable and produces bright and clear tones.
