Abstract

In this paper, I will be focusing on how scenes, music, background, and “objects” (the cat)

affected the movie. The different skills the director used to show things instead of telling them.

The setting of the mood and emotions to the overall. And how the actors use their talents to make

everything come together.

Reflection Two: A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

The movie ​A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night​ by Ana Amipour is a black and white

thriller that follows “the Girl” (vampire) and Arash life. The film sets the mood with music and

camera angles representing the tone of the scene. When the girl is in her room dancing by herself

and then starts to put on makeup. The camera starts off with a long shot distance focusing on the

room, showing all her posters and room design (pg 105). Then it focuses on her face, close off,

and her doing her makeup (pg.56). Showing her inner emotions and deepest thought.

Demonstrating that even though she is a vampire she still has the mind of a human, with

emotions and feelings.

The scene when Arash is walking around town not caring much about anything is shot in

long-shot distance to show the background. The focus is on the town, The Bad City, and its

poverty. When the camera changes to a closeup, Arash is walking closer and closer with the dead

bodies lying in the back. His focus is more on the cat that he is carrying than the dead bodies.

Representing how little life is in a situation like theirs. The music manifests his feeling referring

to how “normal” everything in the town is to them.

The cat is a constant theme in the film. The actors have to work with what they have and

the cat is a form of clarity from the town (pg 132). As the cat is always cared for and is always

watching the bad things happen but is “immune” to it all. Even at the end when the boy sees the

cat in the girl’s hand, representing how she did a bad thing. Which was murdering his father.
