“Digital Elevation Model And
Resolutions"
05/05/2020
Q1- What is your understanding regarding Digital Elevation
Model (DEM)?
Digital Elevation Model and is a raster data file which represents the different altitudes and
depths of particular locations. It shows elevation with respect to a reference datum. Like all
raster files, the DEM is divided into rows and columns of pixels with each of the pixels
containing information regarding the level of the object.
On a map, it is not seen in the form of a matrix rather it is visible as a color gradient or
ramp. The variation of shading with support of legends the specifics of different elevations
of the DEM dataset is observed. The image below is an example of a dem file extracted
from Upper River Indus Plain.
Each pixel of the raster file contains of average values of elevation. The precision of the
values and their accuracy improves with improvement of the resolution, albeit the storage
memory of the file will increase.
A DEM is beneficial in cartography and is obtained from digital aerial photographs, imagery
from satellites, digital pictures (all of which falls under the method of remote sensing.)
Q2- Which DEM resolutions are freely available at global
scale?
3m, 10m, 15m, 30m, 60m, 90m and even 120m is available.
Furthermore 225m, 450m, 1km is available:
