Good, Evil, and The Presidency

Assignment: Write a sentence or two about each of the bullet points as you watch the video.

1. THE WILD YOUNG MAN


 Family-
 Parents moved from Ireland to Carolina
 His father died right before he was born
 His brother died of heatstroke during revolution and his mother and other brother
died from disease during the revolutionary war.
 He blames the British for his family dying.
 Nashville-

 His Temper-
 Rachel/Marriage Controversy-
 Fell in love with a married woman, Rachel.
 “Stole” her away and asked her to marry him
 She agreed and asked her husband to file for divorce because she could not.
 Early political career-
 Did not like the stuffy politicians
 They did not like him
 Rage and emotion fueled everything he did
 After about a year he stopped being a politician because he hated the way it
operated.
 The Hermitage-
 Nickname for the plantation he owned right outside of Nashville
 Started off as a 420 acre farm with a great number of slaves and ended up as a
huge 1050 acre farm with 161 slaves.
2. THE WAR HERO
 War of 1812-
 General of Tennessee
 Destroyed an Indian village and killed over 1,000 Indians in one Battle
 “Old Hickory”-
 His soldiers called him this because he was as tough as a hickory stump
 War against the Creeks-
 Invaded and destroyed an Indian Creek village
 Slaughtered over 1000 Creek Indians
 Battle of New Orleans-
 Jackson and his troops stood his ground
 The British had over 2000 dead while the Americans only had 13 dead and 58
injured.
 War in Florida-
 Jackson invaded Florida without instruction and captured it, arresting and
executing 2 British nationals for helping the Indians.
 Gov. of Florida-
 Afterwards he was elected as governor of Florida and oversaw the transfer of
land with Spain.
3. THE CANDIDATE
 Jackson different because…
 He had a limited education
 Spoke no foreign language
 Never left America
 Little legislative experience.
 However he was loved and respected by many Americans
 Election of 1824-
 There was no organized presidential campaign for the candidates
 Jackson had powerful political friends in TN organize meetings to help greaten
his influence.
 Results-
 Jackson got 43% of the popular vote and 99 electoral votes.
 Not a majority so the election went to the House of Representatives to decide
 Henry Clay sided with Adams causing Adams to win and Clay to be his secretary
of State.
 Jackson declared this as a corrupt bargain that screwed him over.
 Election of 1828-
 Jackson’s campaign was the first campaign to directly appeal to voters through a
pro political organization
 Lots of influential politicians helped Jackson run for president.
 Mud Slinging-
 Jackson’s opponents started a slander campaign against Jackson
 They called out his wife, his violence, incidents of disrespect for civilian
authority, and many other bad things that Jackson did.
 Results-
 Jackson won easily.
 Rachel-
 Racheal died the year Jackson was elected, 1828.

4. THE FIRST MODERN PRESIDENT


 Changes in the government-
 After a few weeks after getting in to office he fired a lot of government officials.
Some that have been there since Washington was president.
 “Spoils System”-
 The act of cleaning out and renewing the offices in the government was called
the spoils system by his enemies.
 John & Peggy Eaton-
 John was the secretary of War and married Peggy while in office
 When he did marry her a rumor came out that her last husband killed himself
when he found out that Peggy was talking to John.
 Politicians then refused to invite John and Peggy to any parties or social events
 This seriously slowed the government process.
 Jackson’s and the Eaton Affair-
 Jackson focused more on the Eaton Affair than anything else in his presidency
5. DEFENDER OF THE UNION
 John Calhoun-
 Was vice president to Jackson
 Argued that any state had the power to declare null and void any federal law they
saw as unconstitutional.
 This came into play when the southerners were protesting the tariffs put in place
and Calhoun agreed with them.
 Nullification Ordinance-
 The nullification ordinance is when any state had the power to declare null and
void any federal law they saw as unconstitutional.
 Jackson issued an official proclamation against nullification.
 Compromise Tariff Bill-
 Passed to satisfy the southerners rioting against the tariff laws.
 Abolitionists-
 All people that were against slavery and wanted it abolished
 By 1833 these people started the Anti-Slavery Society to get more people to
abolish slavery.
 They started to mail pamphlets out to spread their message
 One of the postmasters saw these and threw them to a crowd of people who
burned them
 The Jackson administration did nothing besides ban the sending and publishing
of anti-slavery articles
 The abolitionists saw this as unconstitutional.
 Small Family Farms-
 Jackson saw small family farms as the backbone of America.
 Indian Removal Act-
 Issued this act to get the Indians out so he could expand westward and put small
family farms in.
6. THE PROPHET
 Bank of the United States-
 Jackson hated this bank and set out to shut it down to protect the average man
from the rich exploiting them.
 Bank deposits-

 Secretary of the Treasury-
 After his first secretary said no to taking the federal funds out of the Bank of the
United States Jackson fired him and hired a new one.
 Whig party-
 Formed to protest the tyrannies of King Andrew I or Andrew Jackson.
 They felt that Jackson was above the law so they removed his secretary of
treasury and censured him.
 Bank War-
 The fight between Jackson and the Whigs to get rid of the National Bank.
