Embracing Diversity in the Workplace

This video discusses the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. It begins by defining diversity as acknowledging individual differences, while inclusion occurs when a culture values those differences. It then notes that unconscious biases can negatively impact employees' careers. The video emphasizes that discrimination based on attributes like age, gender or disability is illegal. It also provides examples of disadvantages underrepresented groups may face, such as difficulties getting interviews or promotions. Finally, it encourages viewers to reflect on their own biases and take action to promote inclusion in their organizations.

VIDEO INTRO

VOICEOVER
Today’s job market is ever evolving, and so are the people who personify it. Now is
the time for Human Resource professionals to foster an organizational culture were
the words Inclusion and Diversity are welcomed as opposed to rejected.
Is your organization accepting of diversity and inclusion in the workplace?
Are you?
Oftentimes people hear these two terms and 1. insist they are not part of the issue
and have zero to learn OR 2. they automatically disconnect from the training ahead
of them.
Have you ever been guilty of this?

WHAT IS WORKFORCE DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION?

VOICEOVER
Although they are often used interchangeably, inclusion and diversity are their own
two concepts. Diversity acknowledges and highlights individuality regardless of
one’s differences (sex, gender, race, etc.). Workplace inclusion occurs when an
organization’s culture accepts and values those individual and group diversities.
* New Slide *
As HRD professionals, it is our duty to remember that employees are more than
organizational human-capital – they are individuals. Unfortunately, employees may
find themselves inadvertently falling into an array of categories that can either join
or separate them from fellow colleagues.
* New Slide *
In many cases, these unconscious biases, or blind spots, can even impede their
career goals within an organization.
WHY IS INCLUSION & DIVERSITY IN THE WORKPLACE SO IMPORTANT

VOICEOVER
When an employee’s work life is negatively impacted merely because of who they
are or what they look like, it is not only unethical, it’s illegal. The U.S. Equal
Employment Opportunity Commission prohibits discriminate against applicants or
employees who fall into underrepresented groups.

These groups may include, but aren’t limited to, age; sex, gender, sexual
orientation; race and ethnicity; religion; disabilities (whether visible or invisible);
military, educational, or socio economic statuses.
*
What many see as “disparities, hindrances, disadvantages, or limitations” are
simply not so. It takes all different types of employees to make an organization run.
*
By hiring and retaining diverse employees, you are gaining perspective, awareness,
and expertise that only comes from thinking outside the traditional box of like-
mindedness.

WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF DISADVANTAGES UNDERREPRESENTED WORKERS

FACE?

VOICEOVER
So, what are some of the disadvantages under-represented groups face in the
workplace?
*
The application process in and of itself can present issues. Many applicants struggle
even securing an interview simply because of the basic data required to apply such
as their date of birth (which alludes to their age), their own name may give away
their ethnicity, and if applicable, the question, “Do you need special
accommodations?”
*
Furthermore, with challenges regarding promotions, wages and benefits, layoffs and
terminations, training, and job duties.

VOICEOVER
BEFORE YOU GO
Let’s reflect back on my question from the beginning of the presentation: Are you
guilty of ever mentally disconnecting from an Diversity and Inclusion Training prior
to it even starting?
*
If so, perhaps you have never had to think about these issues when simply applying
for a job or fighting for the one you already have.

But here’s the good news: it’s not too late to zone back in.
*
Awareness AND action are pivotal in eliminating unconscious biases, so I encourage
you to stay aware - because something in the workplace is broken with respect to
Diversity and Inclusion, and it needs to be fixed. Employees are invaluable assets
and should be treated as such regardless of their differences.
