Intrinsic Motives & Physical Activity in PE Students

This document summarizes an undergraduate thesis that examined the relationship between intrinsic motives and physical activity participation among college students taking a soccer course. The thesis used a questionnaire to collect data on students' demographic information, physical activity participation levels, and intrinsic motivation. Results showed most students were 20-22 years old, male, Muslim, and had high intrinsic motivation for physical activity. The majority participated 2-3 times per week for 0.25-1.16 hours in sports and games. Only gender and type of activity were significantly correlated. The study concludes with recommendations to employ more regular physical activities and conduct further research on promoting physical activity.

ABSTRACT

Tecson, Jomarie R. “Intrinsic Motives in Relation to Physical Activity

Participation among Service Physical Education 4 (Soccer) Students’’. An
Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, College of Sports,
Physical Education and Recreation, Mindanao State University, Marawi City, May 2018.
Thesis Adviser: Prof. Atreju Mikhail Sam A. Gallardo

This study determined the relationship between Intrinsic Motives and Physical
Activity Participation among Service Physical Education 4 (Soccer) students. The
moderating variables are age, gender, religious affiliation, and type of physical activity
participation. This study was conducted among the Service Physical Education 4 (Soccer)
in Mindanao State University-Main Campus, Marawi City.
The research instrument questionnaire was used as a primary tool. The
questionnaire consisted of three (3) main parts, namely: Part I is the demographic profile
of the Service Physical Education 4 (soccer) students such as age, gender, and religious
affiliation. Part II is the Physical Activity Participation consisted of three (3) sections
such as frequency, length of time or duration, and type of physical activity. The
frequency is classified as once a week, 2x a week, 3x a week, 4x a week, 5x a week, and
6x a week and daily. The length of time or duration is classified as the number of hours
per week. Lastly, the type of Physical Activity classified as: sports/game, dance, fitness,
outdoor recreation, household activities. Part III is the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory
(IMI) developed by Ryan, R.M., and Deci, E.L. (1982) having five (5) choices with the
corresponding points of one (1) Very Untrue, two (2) Somewhat Untrue, three (3)
Neutral, four (4) Somewhat True, five (5) Very True, respectively to the positive
statements and 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 for the negative statements. The questionnaire contains of
18 questions with positive and negative statements.
Descriptive statistics, the measurement of central tendencies using the mean,
frequency and percentage will be used. For the relationship: the Pearson r will be used for
numerical variables, 1-Way ANOVA for nominal versus numerical variables, and
Cramer’s V for nominal variables.
Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn:
The majority or 82 respondents (60.7%) belonged to the age group 20-22;
majority or 84 respondents (62.2%) were male; Most of the respondents (62.2%) were
Muslims; majority or 77 respondents (57.0%) had high intrinsic motives toward physical
activity participation; majority or 99 respondents (73.3%) participated twice and thrice a
week; majority or 82 respondents (72.3%) participated per week from .25-1.16hour in
physical activity; majority or 95 respondents (70.4%) participated in sports/games; only
gender and physical activity participated (p=.033) showed as significant correlation; there
was no significant correlation found among the moderating variables of age, gender and
religious affiliation, and the dependent variables of physical activity participation with p-
values of 0.206, 0.165 and 0.495, respectively; and there was no significant relationship
existed between the independent variable of intrinsic motives and the dependent variable

iii
of physical activity participation classified into frequency (p=0.106), duration (p=0.186)
and type of physical activity (p=0.974).
The findings of the study could be made as basis in formulating new methods for
Physical Education.
The College of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation should employ more
regular activities especially for the students in order for them to engage their interest and
motivation in participating activities. Also, they will provide activities for the students
like aerobic dancing, outdoor activities and other kind of physical activity that will help
develop and improve the different aspects of their lives, in order to gain more energy in
their daily activity.
Students are highly acknowledged in participating physical activity for them to
have a healthy lifestyle, build their confidence, another chapter of experience and at the
same time to gain more knowledge and be able to socialize others. Students should
choose the best physical activity that is suited for them and increase the days and length
of time in participating physical activity.
Physical educators and school teachers should encourage not just their student but
the community as a whole why regular participation of physical activity is important for
health. They should discover and explore other kinds of physical activity that may give
enjoyment, relaxation, letting go off-steam, and belongingness. They should emphasize
that the role physical activity is very important.
The College of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation with the active
participation of the whole university staff, should conduct more workshops and seminars
for the students to broaden their knowledge on different aspects of physical activities.
For the researcher, conduct a study that will significant in the promotion of
physical activity for the senior citizens or throughout Mindanao. Help provide linkages
for the physical educators, private and government agency for developing physical
activity programs and encourage other researcher to conduct the study concerning
attitude towards exercise.
