CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Nowadays, our generation is surrounded by the modern technology
which we use in our everyday life such as communication, entertainment,
searching, generating income, and etc. Any form of technology became
very useful especially in the business industry in terms of developing,
marketing, advertising, and many more.
Management covers the planning, control, and administration of the
operations. It is the art of getting things done through and with the people
in formally organized group. Information is considered as valuable
component of an organization. It is the data that is processed and is
presented in a form which helps the management in planning, controlling
and operating. A system is defined as a set of elements which are joined
together to achieve a common objective. Data is processed into
information with the help of a system. It is made up of inputs, processing,
outputs, and feedback or control.
Thus, Management Information System means a system of
processing data in order to give proper information to the management
for performing its functions. Knowing the proper use of management
information system can help the organization in many ways.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
A management information system (MIS) is a computer system
consisting of hardware and software that serves as the backbone of an
organization's operations. MIS gathers data form multiple online systems,
analyzes the information, and reports data to aid in management decision-
making.
The system is expected to fulfil the information needs of an
individual, a group of individuals, the management functionaries which are
the managers and top management. The MIS helps in strategic planning to
aid in management control, operational control, transaction process, and to
establish decision-making; helps in coordination among the department
areas; helps in finding out solutions to the problem inside the organization. It
can analyze the performance last year means whatever the organization did
last year or previous years and the business performance this year and also
measures organization development and growth.
According to Maeve Cummings (1999), an author of Management
Information System for the Information Age, a management information
system is the study of computers and computing in a business environment.
Computer science focuses on the machine while information systems or
MIS focuses on how it can support the strategy and operation of an
organization. The concept includes what computers can do in this field, how

people process information, and how best to make it accessible and up to
date.
Data is the bloodstream of any business entity. Everyone in an
organization needs the information to make decisions. An information
system is an organized way of recording, storing data, and retrieving
information. The management information system is a broad term that
incorporates many specialized systems. It is the study of people,
technology, organizations, and the relationships among them. MIS
professionals help firms realize maximum benefit from investment in
personnel, equipment, and business processes. It is a people-oriented with
an emphasis on service through technology.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
This chapter primarily presents the different researches and other
literatures from both foreign and local researches, which have significant
bearings on the variables included in the research. It focuses on several
aspects that will help in the development of this study and the roles of
computer in the organization and on system analysis will be presented on
this chapter. MIS and their impact organizational efficiency and
effectiveness are likewise presented.
RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
Related foreign literature is the basis of the proponents on how the
system will run. It is a system that been developed outside the country that
almost have the same system and functionalities. Information system takes
a very significant role in management life. It greatly affects and interferes in
the management decision, planning, and the development of new product or
services (Kumar and Mittal). Information System which is composed of
formalized produces that can provide all of the relevant appropriate
information at all levels to all of the managers is called Management
Information System (MIS). Management Information System is basically an

affective combination of human and technology resources that result in the
data storage, collection, and communication, data retrieval and usage. In
managerial operations and business planning, these MIS system play a vital
role in business success (Lucy, 1989).
In literature, there are several definitions of the Management
Information System (Lucy, 1989, Thierauf, 1984). The system is capable of
converting the collected data from the routine user and machine interactions
into the effective information which on later on is used by the decision
makers to make efficient decisions. Information system are of significant
importance in any type of organization, generally, it is really impossible for
any organization to operate without any sort of information system. These
information system are developed by focusing the needs and requirements
of the particulars organization which are unique for every other organization
(Thierauf, 1984).
The best system is one that provides useful information and user
interactions all levels. An information system is a collection of activities,
procedures, methods, technology and peoples that are organized to get
valuable related data and information. It should be capable of data

processing and responding to its end user by providing the answers to all
set of queries. MIS should best interacts and communicates with the end
user in order to provide the accurate required information (Knight and Silk,
1990).
These information system had helped to fulfil the needs and
requirements of decision making not only at managerial but also at the
operational level. Every organization develops its own Management
Information System (MIS) which is totally dependent on the personal needs
of the organizations. Management information system developed for one
organization is useless for other organizations with different requirements
(Cassidly and Cresswell, 1997). Related local literature is a system that
been developed within the country that is almost the same to the system
that the proponents developed. The study was conducted by evaluating the
analysis, design and management of the Student information System (La
Vielle, 2004).
This presents related study of the system that the proponents
developed, where the system developed within the country. It provides the

ideas to help the proponents to get concrete ideas about the system
(Rollan, 2004).
MIS is a concept linked with man, machine, marketing and methods
for collecting information from the internal and external source and
analyzing the information to facilitate the process of decision-making of the
business. All business crave improved operational efficiency and flexibility.
Previous research of (DeLone and McLean, 2003) implies that the
success of information system will enhance the performance of enterprises.
This is the reason numerous companies have invested considerably in
information systems as a strategy trying to gain an advantage over
competitions. In the long run, a good and most of all operational, functional
and efficient management information system should be sustained by
electronic data communication network system that are proven to be stable
and reliable (Priem and Butler, 2001). In addition, a way to increase
company operations and improve their overall effectiveness, companies
adopt new management techniques with the goal of enhancing overall
decision-making processes, improve results and finally reduce costs (Henry,
2001; AlMaryani and Sadik, 2012).

SYNTHESIS
Is the summarizing of all the topic of the proponents develops. The
proponents get the related foreign studies and literature, related local
literature and studies for the basis of the system that the proponents
developed. It is one of the process that really help to the researchers in
planning and developing the system. It also give ideas to the proponents
on how the program will look and function to give the need of an
organization that choose to develop the system.
