The ABM strand in its most fundamental sense refers to the

accountancy, business, and management academic programs they

concentrate on the foundational concepts in corporate operations, financial

management, business management, as well as each and every factor that

revolves around those central fields and students for those who wants to

pursue this strand is critical for knowing they're perception about it. This

research is about perception of selected grade 10 students of Dasmariñas

West National High School towards why choosing ABM strand. Our general

objective aims to determine of their expectation and to assess their

awareness for becoming an ABM student. The students must know their

decision are important because it will be their life in senior high school and it

is about business and its branches for planning to have a successful

business and learn the steps of managing the business.

Surveying the respondents, specifically the Grade 10 students of

Junior high school, have the different perspective of reason. Five students

from Dasmariñas West National High School who were particularly planning

to take ABM strand in Senior High School and was interviewed by the

researchers about the perception towards ABM strand. The respondents

gave an answer with potential and that corresponds to the researcher's ii

needs.

THE PROBLEM: RATIONALE AND BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Nowadays, students find it difficult to choose their strand for Senior

High School. ABM stands for Accountancy, Business Management. If the

students are planning to take up a business course after graduation then

ABM Strand would be the best choice.

Choosing the path that you are going to take is a hard decision for a

student, your decision will either drag you down or lift you up. Your choice

should consider the things that you like and your goal in your life. Once you

choose this situation, it will give a big impact on your future and your entire

life. ABM strand is a field that educate you on being successful on a career

related job with a lot of opportunities in different fields in the future industry.

Choosing a business related course will help you start your professional

goals and objective and help you on your long term goal and career path.

The researchers also choose this topic because they want to know

how the ABM Strand can also be fit or to know what the weaknesses of the

students are. In this study, the researchers discuss the perceptions of

selected Grade 10 students towards why choosing ABM Strand.

Background of the Problem

The ABM Strand its most fundamental sense refers to the

Accountancy, Business and Management. Academic programs that

concentrate on the foundational concept in corporate operation, financial

management, business management as well as each and every factor that

revolved around those central fields by taking the ABM Strand you will be

trained to analyze assets, understand everything involved with financial

positions, interpret various profitable, and prepare audit accounts.

According to Nancy C. McClure, researchers and educators since John

Dewey’s time have studied and tried to identify those factors that contribute

to student motivation. While intrinsic and extrinsic rewards and social

opportunities play a part, the thing that motivates most learners is the

usefulness of the information and its potential for impacting others (1).

Indeed, research on IDEA (2) has shown that students’ initial motivation to

take the course, regardless of who taught it, is an important predictor of

teacher and course ratings and student learning. This relationship provides a

great opportunity for teachers to capitalize on that interest but it also offers a

challenge to teachers whose students are less interested in the subject or

course. Thus, it behoves teachers in both situations to demonstrate the

relevance and significance of the subject matter from the first day of class to

the last. We can stimulate interest by both showing our students the

content’s real-world connections and by involving students in activities that

inspire creative applications.

The researchers finds this study interesting to all concern especially

the learners who is the significant factor in education, to generate the

knowledge in determining the students who enroll in Accountancy and

Business Management (ABM) strand in the Senior High School in Grades 11

and 12 because one of the crucial factor in successful transitions from high

school to college is the demonstration of college readiness (Anderson &

Fulton, 2015). Being college ready is a process that takes time and begins

before a student's senior year in high school. The fact that the Philippines

most comprehensive education system reform under K to 12 policy started in

the year 2012 and then comes SY 2016 – 17, four years after is the full blast

implementation and realization of the Senior High School Grades 11 and 12

this coming June 2016.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

Generally, the study aims to determine the perceptions of the selected

Grade 10 students of Dasmariñas West National High School towards why

choosing ABM track in 2018- 2019 and to assess their awareness for

becoming an ABM student.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Specifically, the study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What are the perceptions of the selected Grade 10 students of

Dasmariñas West National High School towards why choosing ABM

Strand?

2. What are the reasons of the selected Grade 10 students of

Dasmariñas West National High School towards why choosing ABM

Strand?

3. How did the Grade 10 students of Dasmariñas of Dasmariñas West

National High School come up in choosing ABM Strand?

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This research will be focusing on determining the perceptions towards

why choosing ABM track among the selected Grade 10 students of

Dasmariñas West National High School in 2018-2019.

The respondents in this research are the student from Dasmariñas

West National High School in 2018-2019. This research will be conducted in

the Dasmariñas West National High School.

The researchers will be gathering all the information through survey.

The researchers submitted a little proposal during month of

December. While waiting for the approval the researchers discussing and

planning for the research that they will conduct.

The research orientation as a subject started last December 2018

and it should be presented on March 2019.

HYPOTHESIS

There is no significant difference between the profile of the selected

Grade 10 students of Dasmariñas West National High School and their

perceptions towards why choosing ABM Strand.

IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

It can help the Grade 10 students about a certain knowledge on where

to focus on their interest and what to learn about the field they love studying.

This study is also important because it will help the selected Grade 10

students to develop early their information about their perception on a certain

course they wanted to pursue.

In that case it will help student to build their knowledge and their

consciousness about their decision and perception about the Accountancy

and Business Management Strand.

If they know some of the perception of their co-students, it will help

them to know some of the struggles that they are going to face and what are

the certain thing that they will enjoy.

This research can benefit the future researchers by using this research

as their source and reference in conducting researches about the

perceptions of students regarding ABM strand.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Accountancy- is major course of the commerce or business course. It is the

practice of recording, classifying, and reporting on business transactions for

a business. It provides feedback to management regarding the financial

results and status of an organization. 

Business- is a program or study offered at Universities and colleges that

focuses on business theory, practices and management. It requires some

form of investment and enough customers to whom its output can be sold on

a consistent basis in order to make a profit.

Management- is the control and organizing of a business or other

organization. It is also a course provided by educational establishments such

as a University, which teaches skills concerning the management of a

company, business, etc.

ABM Strand- it is one of the Academic tracks. It equips the students with

essential fundamental concepts on business specialized courses. ABM will

definitely boost the skills and competencies of Senior High School students

aspiring to take Accountancy, Business Administration and Management in

college.

Fundamentals – basic financial facts that show whether a business and its 11

shares, etc. or an economy and its currency, are strong and successful.

Assets – is any resource owned by the business. Anything tangible, or

intangible that can be owned or controlled to produce value and that is held

by a company to produce positive economic value is an asset.

Financial Position – the status of the assets, liabilities, and owner’s equity

(and their interrelationships) of an organization, as reflected in its financial

statements. Also called financial condition.

Profitable – are measured in money earned beyond expenses, so profitable

businesses or transactions make money.

Extrinsic – applies to what is distinctly outside the thing in question or is not

contained in or derived from its essential nature.

Intrinsic – is a core concept of value investors seeking to uncover hidden

investment opportunities.

FOREIGN LITERATURE

The literature review shows that the business related education is a

public need and will help people in terms of economic, social, and

academics. It is the fastest growing service-producing industry in the United

States, Students thinks that the Business Education provides career and jobs

information. Students believes that they will earn big income and become

successful after they graduate because of their education, and they can

attend a four year course on college. Students based their course or they

choose business related course based on their expectation, work awareness

According to the study of students in the University of San Agustin

researchers, batch 2017-2018) ABM Strand or Accountancy, Business and

Management is for those who plan on taking up Economics, Business

Administration, Accountancy and Marketing in college. The Accountancy,

Business and Management (ABM) strand would focus on the basic concepts

of financial management, business management, corporate operations, and

all things that are accounted for ABM can also lead you to careers on

management and accounting which would be sales manager, human

resources, marketing director, project officer, bookkeeper, accounting clerk,

internal auditor, and a lot more. The business courses can help you to prove

yourself, grow your network, and re-brand yourself, and also expand your

knowledge. The advantages of a graduate’s degree in the field of business

can always be argued but when it comes to its accessibility, business

courses offers more choices that a network of job offers.

SYNTHESIS

Management, that in choosing ABM Strand, you must have your own

knowledge in every step that you take, you must have your own guts to be

succeed, to be encourage, prove yourself that you can do it for your future, 14

and business courses offers more choices of job in the future.

FOREIGN STUDIES

Theoretical and Conceptual Framework Gottfredson’s theory,

occupational aspirations are a reflection of one’s self-concept. People seek

occupations that (a) arc congruent with their self-image and (b) reflect their

knowledge of different occupations. This theory describes that students

become attracted to certain specialization.

According to this theory, self-concept is the key to specialization

selection. Students tend to choose jobs that are compatible with their

personality. In the study of Siguan Jr., (1994) as cited in Sonsona (2012)

self-concept was also found significant on the choice of specialization of

students. Another is Holland’s theory of career choice suggested that people

can function and develop best and find jobs satisfaction in work

environments that are compatible with their personalities. People tend to

choose a career that is reflective of their personality. Holland (1994), suggest

that the closer the match of personality to job, the greater the satisfaction.

Holland’s theory places emphasis on the accuracy of self-knowledge and

career information necessary for career decision making (Zunker, 1994 p.

49) as cited in Abernathy (2003).

LOCAL STUDIES

According to Roque et al. (2016) in their study entitled “The Perceptions

of the Grade 11 Students Regarding the Effectiveness of ABM Strand on its

Initial Implementation at the University of the East Caloocan”, in order to get

along with the demand of higher standards of education and also to improve

the skills of the future work forces, the government led by the President of

the Philippines with the help of his Department of Education Secretary are

trying to connect education from pre-school through post-secondary to

prepare the students before their college life and also to enhance their skills

and talents that can help them to get more opportunities.

SYNTHESIS

Perceptions of students about why choosing ABM Strand has a

great impact on their decisions. Based on the Theoretical and Conceptual

Framework Gottfredson's theory in foreign studies, it describes that students

become attracted to certain specialization. According to Roque [Link] (2016) ,

the government led by the President of the Philippines with the help of his

Department of Education Secretary are trying to connect education from pre-

school through post-secondary to prepare the students before their college

life and also to enhance their skills and talents that can help them to get

more opportunities. Students who choose ABM Strand for their Senior High

School can enhance their skills and knowledge to participate for more 16

opportunities to come.

CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter present the methods and procedures that were employed

in this study. It discusses the research design, the sample, the research

instruments, the data gathering process, data analysis and the discussion of

the data gathered.

Research Design

This study is all about the Perception of the selected Grade 10

students of Dasmariñas West National High School towards why choosing

ABM track employed qualitative research. Qualitative research explores the

attitude, behaviour, and experience through methods such as interview and

narrative essay as well as the aim of this study. Mix approach applied to this

study, it is correlative research that attempts to determine the perception of

grade 10 students towards ABM Strand. In data gathering the researchers

developed the questions about the perceptions of the selected grade 10

students towards ABM Strand. The gathered data from the respondents was

carefully analyze.

The Sampling Technique

The researchers used availability sampling by selecting a sample from the

population. The selected participants are selected for the research not

because they have to participate but because they are readily available. To

get the availability sampling, researcher go to their previous school and

conduct interview and the individuals agree to participate when the

researchers catch them on their classes.

The Research Instrument

The researchers prepared ten interview questions for the selected

five grade 10 students as respondents. These were chronologically as

followed. The specific questions were formulated and validated by an expert

to assure the reliability of the interview questions.

Data Gathering Process

The researchers construct a letter for approval to be approved by their

instructor, principal, academic coordinator, and Senior High School

Coordinator. After that, the researchers also construct a letter of permission

for the respondents of Dasmarinas West National High School to allow them

to conduct an interview. The researchers get the trust of the respondents and

explain to them what is the topic and the purpose of conducting the interview.

The researchers encourage the respondents to answer the questions about

perceptions of the respondents why they choose ABM Strand for Senior High

School. The researchers will gave the last question and ask the respondents 18

clarification about the questions.

Students A and E said that this strand can help to their future as well as their

parents wants this strand for them. While student B, C, and D they also

agree that it would help them in their future course and for them, ABM strand

is the only strand that is suited for them.

Interpretation:

In table 2, it shows the reasons of Grade 10 students towards 23

choosing ABM Strand.

The respondents have the same answer on the reasons why they

Interpretation:

In table 3, it shows the approach or how did the students come up in

choosing ABM strand for Senior High School.

Based on the respondent’s answers, all of them agree that choosing

ABM strand can help them for their college because for them, the lessons

that are going to tackled in Senior High would be the preview for the lessons

in college and they know that their college would be easier. Also, all the

respondents expected to have a good income when they complete their

education, because of their family background so that they expected to earn

higher as much as possible.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

The study examined the perception of the grade 10 students of

Dasmariñas West National High School towards why choosing ABM track in

2018-2019. Data was collected in the course of a structured interview

questionnaire and analyze through their answers and perceptions. They are

considering this strand because their skills, the course that they wanted to

take, and knowledge is inclined and suitable in this strand and this is also

what they wanted to pursue. They choose this strand because they think that

this strand will help them on college because in senior high school, teachers

will teach them and will help them to get ready on college. They also expect

to have a good salary income on the work that is inclined on their course.

The students know their want soon. It is helpful to have a background

on what they will get in college. It is hard if you get that course then you don’t

want it, and you will ship in another course.

The objective of the study is to determine the perceptions of the

selected Grade 10 students of Dasmariñas West National High School

towards why choosing ABM track in 2018-2019 and to assess their

awareness for becoming an ABM student.

The researchers wanted to know the perception of Grade 10 towards

why choosing ABM strand and based on the gathered interpretation of data

from the study is that they wanted to choose this strand because this will help

them a lot, they will receive a lot of advantages from the subjects or learning

in this strand when they go to college. Their academic ability, academic

experiences and parent's choice is their foundation on choosing this strand.

Student has different thinking, in choosing a strand it should be align

to the course of what will you get in college, so it will not be hard for you to

adjust and it is for you because you have a background about it.

recommendation where put below:

1. Parents needed to save money for their children on the course that he/she

wanted to pursue.

2. Students should think what they really wanted to secure their future.

3. Their grades and abilities should suit the course that they wanted so that

the students will enjoy the studies.

4. Parents and students should talk about the course that the student really

wanted and should consider all the struggles that might somehow encounter.

5. Parents should support the dreams and goals of the students.

6. Student should gather some advices from the other people that has

experience on the course he/she wanted to pursue.

You should know if the skills or capability you have are suited for that

strand and not because your friend told you or you just want it. You should

have a passion on it because it will help or lead you to succeed in the future.
