What kind of competency-based interview questions can you be asked?
Generally competency based questions are to gain:
Your past experiences with dealing with problematic situations.
Effective use of your own initiative
Effectively seeking outside help
Dealing with pressure in a positive way
The ability to compromise when dealing with conflicting arguments
Examples of questions:
Give us an example of a situation where you had to deal with a conflict with an internal or
external client/customer.
How do you influence people in situations where there are conflicting views?
Tell us about a situation where you made a decision and then changed your mind.
Give us an example of a situation where you had a fundamental disagreement with one of
your superiors.
Where have you had to adhere to strict time schedules?
Where have you had to deal with a task which seemed to take a long time to resolve?
Theses are just examples and the internet holds a lot of information to help also
Answers:
The client is looking for positive reactions, coupled with strong examples.
Work-Based: The best example as it shows dealing with it in a similar situation
Non work-based: Where you are unable to provide a work based answer, an innovative non work
based answer will suffice.
DO NOT USE EXAMPLES WHERE THE OUTCOME IS NOT POSITIVE
The client is only interested in where you have used your skills to be successful, your interview is
about selling yourself to the client, don’t waste the opportunity.
