HUMANITIES II
Art, Society, and the Individual

Course Description: A study of the visual arts and performing arts as products of the creative
imagination in dynamic interaction with society
Prerequisite: Communication Skills II
Credit: 3 units

Course Objectives:
By the end of the course, the students should be able to:
1. Analyze diverse artworks, and the different values inherent in race, gender, and class, as reflected by
the artworks;
2. Draw out thematic concerns and relate the aesthetic values seen in the artworks to cultural, political,
ethical values found in the societies that produced these artworks;
3. Appreciate art as a manifestation of the power of creative imagination and as an expression of the
dialogic relations between the individual and society;
4. Expand their perspectives by examining the cultural assumptions implicit in analyzing art; and
5. Participate in the emergence of a national consciousness through the study of various Philippine
artworks.

Course Outline:
I. The Arts and the Humanities
The Nature of Art: Approaches to Art Practice, Theory, History
Theory: Aesthetics, Philosophy of Art, Art Criticism
II. The Work of Art
Subject, Medium, and Principles of Organization: Elements of the visual arts and a preliminary
survey of art historical styles in the visual arts
III. Art and Society
Discussion on the dynamics/interactions/relations between the artist and society

Course Requirements:
Exams 50%

Other readings to be supplied by the instructor
Class Policies:
1. A student is marked late when he/she arrives after the attendance has been checked.
2. Deadlines are to be strictly observed.
3. All university rules on cheating and absences will be enforced.
4. Excused absences only apply to health reasons and official activities of the college. The request for
excused absence should be given at least a meeting before the activity and should be signed by the
faculty-in-charge. In the case of absences due to health reasons, the student should present an
excuse slip from the attending physician and/or the university health service upon attending the
class after his/her illness.
5. Mobile phones should be put to silent mode.
