Objective:
c. Decode multisyllable words.
Indicators
1. Students will be able to understand that syllables are simply the chunks of sound within a
spoken word that are said with a single puff of air.
2. Every syllable has at least one vowel sound with or without the surrounding consonants
sounds.
Multisyllable words:
Octopus, Umbrella, gigantic, grandmother, astronaut, aeroplane, butterfly, dinosaur, Halloween,
camera, microscope, ambulance, banana, computer, basketball, ladybug, Atlantic, bumblebee,
elephant, Wisconsin.
Preparation/Materials:
Prezi presentation
Computer
Projector
Pencils
Paper
Erasers
Lesson Description: Entire lesson 60 minutes
1. Teacher will ask what do students know about syllables (5 minutes)
2. Teacher will use Prezi presentation to show how syllables are usually divided (15
minutes)

3. Pass out papers and pencils to students (2 minutes)
4. Students are paired and are given extra 20 multisyllable words to chunk it into syllables
and use those words to make contextual sentences (18 minutes)
Following are the extra 20 words:
Fantastic, athletic, assistant, establish, astonish, chocolate, grandfather, obedient,
celebration, impossible, invisible, vegetable, telephone, coloring, refrigerator, librarian,
appreciate, apologize, beautiful, envelope
5. Give each pair a turn to share their answers (10 minutes)
6. Informal assessment (10 minutes)
Informal Assessment:
Each student will be given 10 words to chunk into syllables and write the word using contextual
sentences.
Following are the informal assessment words:
California, university, cafeteria, supermarket, tomato, hospital, policemen, spaghetti, caterpillar,
kindergarten
Adaptations for Gifted/Talented, ELL and Special Education:
Gifted/ talented:
1. Students will be given 30 multisyllable words to work with.
2. Students will write a short story using multisyllabic words rather than writing a sentence.
3. Students will find their own multisyllabic words.
English Language Learners:
1. Students will get assistance to record their thinking.
2. Students will use the following online tool if they get stuck with any word

3. Teacher will assist students whenever they need help.
Special education:
1. Watch students more carefully and give him/her extra instructions to make sure he/she
follows the correct procedure during the activity.
2. Students with special needs can play online games related to multisyllabic words.
Extensions:
If teacher has more time, she will read a book and ask students to write down all the
multisyllabic words that they have heard using chunking strategy. Students will share their list in
small groups.
