Bird Girls' Vocal Direction for Amayzing Gertrude

The music director provides notes for a song called "Amazing Gertrude" to be performed by three Bird Girls. They want the song to have a fun, Latin feel mixed with background vocals from In the Heights and West Side Story. For parts with two voices, the middle part will double the bottom part. Bird Girl 1 should belt in a full voice rather than a typical soprano sound. Bird Girl 2 has the closest thing to a melody and should sing like Beyoncé. Bird Girl 3 should be a strong alto singing the part like it is the main melody, loud and proud.

BIRD GIRLS #1

“Amayzing Gertrude”
Notes from the Music Director:

This should feel super fun and latin. Think “No Me Diga” from
In the Heights mixed with the background vocals in “I Feel
Pretty” from the 2009 Revival of West Side Story.

When there is a two-part split, the middle part will double the
bottom, so there should be one voice on top and two on the
bottom. Three parts, as written.

Bird Girl #1 (Top) - Not a typical soprano sound. I’m looking

for more of a full-voiced belting sound here. Listen to the
soundtrack for inspiration. Last note should be head voice.

Bird Girl #2 (Middle) - This is the closest thing we have to a

melody. Sing out like Beyoncé.

Bird Girl #3 (Bottom) - I’m looking for a really strong alto who
can sing the part like it is the melody. Sing out loud and proud.
